Matrix beat Lord of the Rings for 5 day total in receipts
In the Matrix's first 5 days, it set a record in cinema where they earned 202.8 million dolares. LOTR earned 201.4 million dolares. However, I am confident that this upcoming movie will blow Matrix away.

'Matrix Revolutions' sets all-time record

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Neo is indeed mightier at the box office than Frodo.

In a game of revision and counter-revision, the title holder for the biggest worldwide opening in history -- which has passed during the past few days from "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" to "The Matrix Revolutions" and then back to "Two Towers" -- is once again in the "Matrix" camp.

After adding in some late-arriving international grosses, Warner Bros. is now claiming victory for "The Matrix Revolutions," which amassed $202.8 million in its first five days since opening last Wednesday. That puts it slightly ahead of New Line's "Towers," which racked up $201.9 million in its first five days late last year.

The contest over bragging rights began Sunday when Warners estimated the five-day opening of "Revolutions" at $204 million. The studio issued a news release dated Monday that hailed the film as "the biggest consecutive five-day opening in motion picture history."

1. there's no accounting for taste
the matrix is so tired, so very very tired. Damn all that stupid kung-fu. LOTR rulez the school.

3. I would disagree
While I can see a case against the Matrix.. I cannot agree about LOTR.

Fellowship started off well enough, however, Two Towers was disappointing to say the least, blasphemous at worst. :P

I shudder to think how RoTK will be. I only hope Jackson decides that some elements of the book will be in.. like Eowen fighting the head Nazgul.

*sigh*

I have a feeling though we get to look forward to more EXTREME stuntwork. Maybe Legolas and a giant army of extra elves will suddenly attack Mt. Doom and kill Sauron before Frodo and Sam get there... :eyes:

2. Neo and Trinity are no match for Aragorn, Frodo, etc.
Return of the King will blow all records for opening weekends, I'm sure of it.

5. I would disagree again...
If Neo and Trinity were to fight Aragorn and Frodo..

Well basically any LotR character except one of the magic-users, they would win. Why? Neo and Trinity have and use guns. LotR characters have swords. :P

12. They have guns in a computer simulation.
In the real world, those nifty clips-that-never-need-reloading would, in fact, need reloading.

Seeing as the LOTR exists primarily in what appears to be the equivalent of the iron age, that ain't gonna happen.

Game, set, match.

4. Pish tosh.
No wonder they wanted to open at the same moment worldwide. If everyone heard how much it blew, they wouldn't go see it.

I think LotR will do better in total than the Matrix, it *hasn't* been getting good word of mouth.

6. swords are just plain cooler than guns

add to that the LOTR is based off of one of the best trilogies of all time. These things add up to three conclusions:

1. The Lord of The Rings is better than the matrix

2. Many people have bad taste

3. the architecht in the matrix is really Colonel Sanders, and the whole trilogy is really a fried chicken commercial

edit for me being a total moron

7. No No No!!!
1. The Lord of the Rings (as in the series of books) is better than the Matrix. The Lord of the Rings (as in the recently created series of films, loosely based off the series of novels) is NOT better than the Matrix. They are, IMO, equally pointless. Both have good points and bad points. They are, equal. :P

2. Yes. Many people do. In fact everyone does. Except me. I am the ultimate authority on what is good and what sucks. You should have consulted with me before submitting this post. :P:P

3. No. He is not. No. It is not. :P:P:P

8. pointless statement
How can the companies even pretend to compare the five day opening, when the films did not open in the same places? Biggest 5 day opening in the United States I could understand. But overall? That's just hype to make Matrix look better. Besides, they are comparing a finale to a trilogy to the second film, which statistically gets fewer audience members (usually) (I would back up that info with real data, but since I studied that two years ago, I no longer have the data on hand). Also, have the companies adjusted for inflation. Many films from twenty or thirty years ago could give Matrix a run for its money, if prices were adjusted. (At least, I think they can).

14. it cuts both ways, though, because
... in the past, movies had less competition as an entertainment medium.

no matter how you slice it, $200+ million is not too shabby.

9. It really doesn't matter to me...
Considering I'm going to see them both. Probably repeatedly.
(actually, I've already watched Revolutions. Can't wait for ROTK)
