Meet the Team:
So we took the dogs out for a little more dirt-road training this morning, behind the wheeled cart that approximates a sled. No snow, but we still need to all get in shape for winter!

After the run, the sun came out and I took a few snaps; I thought some folks here might like to get to know my sled dog team! We run four now, since one passed away last year and another is getting on in years.

First, miss Scout, our "lead dog":

Scout is just a little peanut of a dog! She's three, and this is about as big as she's gonna get. But boy can she pull! Both her parents were lead dogs in Iditarod, and her instincts and speed are outstanding -- but she's got a little too much brain for her own good. She knows that there's a lot to see out there, and sometimes she stops to sniff at it (to the derailment of the rest of the team)!

This is my little boy Bodhi, next to his girlfriend Scout:

...And yes, you can see his doodle! Bodhi's a pulling machine, with such a good work ethic. In everything he does, he's just trying to please. His littermate (sister, named Opus!) is probably going to be on the Stormwatch Kennel team this year at Iditarod.

Bodhi's sister by another mom, Krishna:

Again, another dog with a big brain and good knowledge of when she must obey, and when she can get away with doing something else! She likes to lead, and has a kennelmate probably on the Stormwatch team this year as well (brother named Zamboni), but she's a bit of a tourist -- she likes to watch the deer on the side of the road, and "suggest" we all go take a closer look.

And this is Bodhi's first cousin, Zorro:

When he was a pup, he had a perfect little Zorro mask, cute as can be. Another pulling machine, you can sense his impatience when everyone else is slacking off (including me, when I don't kick along!). Zorro is the furriest one of the bunch, just turning into a little black-and-white barrel by mid-winter!

This is Denali, my inspiration:

'Nali is 12 years old, and unquestionably the leader (alpha) of the pack. This is her first season not in harness with the team, which is amazing. Over the past year she's had health problems, leading to the surgical removal of most of her left lung. Two days after the surgery, with a bandaged midsection, she was up and around keeping the rest of the pack in line. I call her my inspiration, because she runs along off leash with the rest of the team when we go out, running ahead, turning back, and getting herself in the lead position and trotting along. She's like something out of a Disney movie, the sweetest most amazing dog I've ever known. Built of stern stuff, Denali; I hope to be doing so well at her age!

And here's everybody:

Hope this has been mildly interesting for everyone; the offer is wide open to any DUer who hits Colorado's Western Slope this winter to come out for a run. In the snow, on the sled, it's a silent magic, like the pack has let you come along for the hunt. There's nothing like it! :)

Oh, and, uh, ask me anything! ;)

3. "Hairy" Krishna?
I always wanted to get a kitten and name him Douglas Fur. Ok, maybe it is only funny to me (and a pup would do, too). Those are beautiful dogs you have, btw.

8. Should've called them all "Hairy"
...Actually, I always thought it would be cool to have two dogs and name them Seamus and Hubris, but my wife thought no one would get it. :)

10. Hubris
...is usually defined as overbearing pride or presumption.

"Seamus" is usually pronounced Shame-us.

It was the pride vs. shame thing, sorta tickled my funny bone. :)

11. No pics of me
For two reasons. First, Bodhi is like a Brad Pitt of dogs. No way would I look good in the same picture as him!

And second, we tried, but Scout kept taking pictures and her paw would be over the lens. Some dogs just can't learn to use a camera. :D

13. Ask you anything?
Okay. Are they Malemute crosses, or purebreds?

Nice dogs! I keep trying to get my cats to pull a sled, but they just want to eat bugs.

14. Purebred Siberian Huskies
Mals are a little frightening pulling a sled. Not just that they're so huge, but they don't always get along so well, being naturally a little more aggressive towards their pack; I've ridden along with a team of six Mals before -- I think they all wanted to be in front of the dog next to them!

17. I have a soft spot for really big dogs
which is why I like the Malemutes so well. I'm embarrassed I mistook Huskies for Malemutes...most of the Huskies I see around here (and they are apparently the state dog, because of the University of Washington), have curlier tails than yours appear to.

21. You would've loved Jack
He was this wonderful outsized Siberian that used to run with us, passed away last year. Could practically saddle him!

To my experience, Mals and Sibes look really similar if you have no sense of scale... I remember walking up to a big old Malemute last year to say hello, hadn't seen one around here before, and I got right up to him and thought I had several feet before I was there -- he had all the features of the Siberians I had been around all winter, only about double all the proportions! :)

16. No questions? Answers anyway!
So DU knows all there is to know about sled dogs, no questions?

Well, fer yer edyukashun, here's something:

The term "mushing" comes from the French "marchez," the imperative form of "marcher," meaning to advance. I've never heard a musher actually yell "mush!" (usually it's "hike!" or my favorite, "c'mon, let's go!"), although I may start yelling "Marchez!", just in case one of my dogs speaks French, and this was my problem all along. ;)

20. Nope!
She's 100% Siberian Husky, as are the rest. Denali's line is mostly from a kennel called Anadyr; their dogs tend to be lean and long, great dogs in harness.

They also tend to have "great big ears" for the breed! The Anadyr (it rhymes!) in the family tree really showed up in Scout, cuz she's such a little thing! :)

It's funny how a few of these kennels - Anadyr, Demavand, and especially Marlytuk - any of them I've had a chance to know their dogs, I can spot their "family" a mile away.
