1. Please whisk that child away. I don't want to have to deal with another
kid's bad manners or desperately needed nap time....

:)

8. Seriously,
Edited on Sun Sep-18-05 05:09 PM by Beware the Beast Man
have you ever known anyone who has lost a child? I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy.

Maybe you're being a prick for beiong a prick's sake, and normally I admire that sort of thing, but not in this case.

9. Can't say I have
but if I'm being a prick in your eyes, it's not going to change my opinion.

Yeah, crib death sucks, and this is my way of stating that I truly believe that a good percentage of reported crib death is parent induced.

16. I'm not a parent.
And yes, I have spent the better part of the last 15 years growing really tired of the RW's "family first" values schtick. Maybe this is your reaction to all that bullshit as well, I don't know. For the record, I never asked for your respect either.

24. None of those children were infants who died of SIDS.
You are comparing apples to oranges.

19. Studies have backed up that assertion
Estimates are that between 1 and 5 percent of crib death cases are actually infanticide. In several cases that have hit the news recently, parents have been charged with murdering several children: sort of a Munchausen-by-proxy that involved death.

21. Still a very low number, thank goodness.
You must also realize that infant humans are meek., sensitive creatures. Unlike other animals, they do not have the instincts to immediately adapt to their surroundings. Some, sadly, don't make it. I don't care what one's theories are, or how one believes that a person's decision to procreate will add to one's personal misery, infant death just ain't funny. Never was.

29. The risk factors for SIDs are:
putting a child to sleep on their stomach, putting blankets in a crib and even putting a child in a room with carpeting where people once smoked. They also include having a child sleep in a bed with an adult who has been smoking or drinking.

However, once those risk factors are removed from the equation, the chances of a SIDS death being related to infanticide greatly increase. I can't point you to a specific study, but my children's pediatrician discussed this with me when they were newborns (because it is a parent's worst nightmare).

However, I do know of a mother who lost her child to SIDS with none of these risk factors involved and, I'm pretty sure, infanticide was not an issue. But, until we know more about post-partum depression and Munchhausen-By-Proxy, I'm afraid infanticide is a reality.

BTW - I'm not defending any sort of attempted humor that may have been involved in the deleted post, I'm just stating that infanticide is very real and very, very sad.

fling his poo-filled nappy for emphasis of his outraged cries. If you're anything close to being his target you'll quickly see what an amazingly effective technique this truly is.

22. The peanut gallery
You know, the all-knowing child psychologists behind me in line at the grocery store (the ones who think thier experience as pet owners means they're qualified to parent) and thier snarky comments. One accused me of child abuse once for buckling the kid into the stroller a bit roughly. I'd love to see them try buckling up a screaming and fighting child a third of thier weight gently. Stupid fuckers.

In my adult life, it has morphed into being an activist and minister. I basicly learned how to channel the energy I spent sobbing and put it into positive action. :)

28. I rather like the mantra.
Especially because the three-year-old has some doozies -- they've been about pacifiers, Rainbow Fish cakes, the fact that I mixed the egg up with the noodles instead of making just eggs, and my personal favorite -- "YOU ARE NOT BIG. YOU ARE NOT BIG. YOU ARE NOT BIG."

33. it's like their little brains are stuck
they just can't really process any more info at that point or accept whatever it may be... it's funny and heart breaking at the same time. Then he or she collapses in a heap and is happy again or asleep.

what's even more fun is when they have enough cognitive skills to actually form an highly reasoned argument and you are stymied! :)

we're always pretty good about watching the meltdown-o-meter and catching him before he hits bottom. get him home, get some food into him, or get him to bed. that's usually what he's needing anyway.
