the two that stick out most for me:
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - Remember that movie? The movie that wasn't really that bad on its own but had absolutely NOTHING to do with Final Fantasy. At all. Anyway if I rmemeber correctly it's basically that the main character tells the skeptical commander guy all this spiritual mumbo-jumbo, then he goes to this canyon which is supposed to reach down to the heart of the Earth. The end. Almost nothing is resolved.
Red Dawn - First a really cheesy action scene. One of the kids meets the Soviet commander and kills him. Had to get that out of the way. Then he carries his wounded brother trying to escape until the Cuban guy catches them and can shoot them both down easily. But 10 minutes ago the director decided to turn that guy into a more sensitive character who got sick of war instead of what he was like before. So he puts his gun down and lets them leave. Then we see a memorial and basically get a message tacked on: oh yeah, the US eventually won the war. What a cop-out.

Close second: The Jackal (loose remake of Day of the Jackal)
Both movies have completely implausible surprise endings that ruin any enjoyment derived from watching the movie up to that point.

|
*SPOILERS AHEAD, FOR THE TWO PEOPLE ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH WHO KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT*
Why...why, why, why...would an alien culture choose to attack a planet that is made up of over 2/3 of the very substance that can kill them instantly. And, if they were going to attack, shouldn't they have done it, I don't know, in the desert maybe? Would have been much better than a town RIGHT NEXT TO A FUCKING LAKE!!!
Could you see us doing that? "Well, let's see, here's a planet that is mostly lava, and where the inhabitants are also made up largely of lava, and thrive on lava, and have it pumped into their houses. And we'll start our invasion right here, at this enormous lava field!"

11. two that I hated were Spiderman and ET |
|
supposed to be a hook to get me to watch the sequel, but with an ending like that why should I want to?
With ET, there were no explanations and I was probably too old to enjoy it like a kid might, but even as a kid I would want some answers. Like why did he suddenly die? And how can he suddenly come back to life? And why can he fly all of the sudden?
Finally, I have never seen it, but both versions of "A Farewell to Arms" (1932 (Helen Hayes, Gary Cooper) which Leonard Maltin gives 3 stars to, and 1957 (Rock Hudson) which he gives 2.5 stars to) must have a horrid ending if they follow the book. That's my take on Hemingway in general - a great storyteller, but he does not know how to end a story, so he usually either kills all his characters or dumps a pile of shite on their heads. Maybe literature is considered more substative if it makes you depressed.

I have a soft spot for "so bad it's good films," but Pirate Movie is way beyond that. The music makes me cringe and I can't believe that the filmmakers could present that movie with a straight face.
My sister used to watch that terrible movie over and over. Luckily something happened to the VHS. Unfortunately, it's now out on DVD. :(
