1. I saw it on Friday!
It was disturbing, to say the least. It would be a great training tool for diversity though!

2. I saw it. I had no idea it was going to be about
racism and tolerance. It was interesting to say the least. It tried to show racism on all fronts. From all perspectives. I was moved by it.

3. I thought it reinforced the very stereotypes it was trying to point out.
The crackhead mother, the mean social worker, it was good in some areas, but I think the real message got lost, it could have been a lot better.

4. I caught on to a little bit of that as well.
Like when Ludacris' character and the other boy were talking about how racist it was of the Sandra Bullock's character to grab on to her hubby b/c she was sacred when she saw them, yet they turn around and steal their car at gun point.

5. It was hit or miss for me (spoilers)
They were trying to show race relations in all their complexity, and that is too difficult to do in one movie. Also, if you're trying to do that, you need to use subtlety much better.

Shell Beau's example of Ludacris and Larenz Tate complaining about Sandra Bullock drawing nearer to her husband as they're about to carjack the two of them is one example. They share some interesting dialogue showing how young black men feel when white people show their fear of them, but this is pretty much negated when the fears are shown to be justified in this case. Also, Ludacris makes a show of "never stealing from the community" but then goes ahead and carjacks (or tries to, anyways) the rich black dude.

I also thought that having Matt Dillon save Thandie Newton after what he had done to her was contrived. Further, while they were in the car, they overdid the sexual thing.

Just some quick thoughts for now.

8. It was contrived, I agree
but, compared to the other crap that is out this year...it will probably make my top ten unless the end of the year brings out something KILLER

10. you are right about the lack of subtlety...
when the white woman was screaming at the Asian driver - "Oooh I'm so surprised it's an Asian driver who can't see over the steering wheel." I thought that was a little too obvious - racism is much more subtle than that. in screenwriting, they call that "too on the nose."

and larenz tate is a friend of mine, so of course he was wonderful. :-)

Very cool film. A little obvious at times, but still quite good.
