Witnesses Watch Man Strangle Swan At Lake (Swan's Mate Cried For Hours)

<snip>

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Police want to find the man who killed a swan at Lake Eola in downtown Orlando.

Mary and Anna Horton saw the whole attack and said they couldn't believe their eyes. They said the man strangled the black swan Sunday night and threw it back into the water, where it died a few minutes later.

They said the bird's mate circled the lake for hours calling out to the swan.

"The mate to that swan was crying and it was awful hearing her do that," said Anna Horton. "She was in distress. She was calling and there was no one calling her back."

The attacker was described as a white male, about five-feet tall with a shaved head with blond stubble. A worker at a nearby restaurant said he carded the man for a beer earlier and he had a Tennessee driver's license that said he was 23.

5. This is disturbing as hell.
Some guy just ups and strangles a swan...while the mate watches in agony?

I hope they throw the book at that creep. That's inexcusible.

7. Animal abuse needs to be taken more seriously
if for no other reason than a strong correlation has been shown in numerous studies between animal abuse and violent crimes against people.

15. Animal cruelty is frequently a prelude to brutality against children
Sadly, the only crime he'd have committed in most states is destruction of private property.

17. I have seen Swan's come up out of the water...they are BIG birds...
This guy is one sick SOB. I cannot figure why people do such reprehensible things; but I also can't figure why the couple who witnessed this, didn't jump the guy and proceed to pound the crap out of him till the cops got there??????

20. Actually, we had a similar case here in Scottsdale, AZ
There were two very well known swans named Winnie and Pooh that lived right by city hall in a man-made lagoon.

Pooh was brutally murdered (his throat slashed) one night by someone who was never caught.

Winnie was devastated, she never recovered. After it became apparant that she was just going to waste away with grief, she was taken to an animal rehabilitation center and given a new mate, IIRC.

Now there is a new pair at city hall. They've been there for some years now, unmolested. I hope it stays that way.

:-(

As the bumper sticker says, "People Who Abuse Animals Rarely Stop There"

Such people are a threat to us all.
