Do you have sub-woofers in your vehicle? If so, WHY??? |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 10:21 PM by Whoa_Nelly
I cannot for the life of me understand the need to listen to music at such high decibels that it guarantees deafness. I have hereditary hearing loss in the voice range, but can hear high and low frequency sounds, especially low frequency. When there's a car with sub-woofers booming, the sound, the vibration is more than irritating...it actually physically hurts my ears. Plus, I really don't enjoy having my car vibrate, having my personal space and music choice intruded upon by some "really cool dude" who often is as many as three to four cars behind me when at a stop on a city street.
With all the statutes in place within many cities and towns regarding noise levels, or having curfews such as 10 PM when disturbing noise is not allowed, why has there not been any curbing of the sub-woofer vehicles? I can hear these monster speakers from over a block away, sometimes waking me up in the middle of the night.
Well, that's my rant
I have experienced one sweet moment O8)regarding someone with those huge sub-woofers in his car.
The guy had a flat, and had to haul the suckers out just to get to his spare.

1. What? WHAT??? Speak up! I can't hear you over the subwoofer! |

Some people are just determined to be idiots. It can't be helped.
(For the record, no, I do NOT have a subwoofer in my vehicle.)

Wha....???
It's a mystery to me why these things are allowed. It's a traffic hazard ... if nothing else.
Also, seems to me that if you can feel it (I certainly can) then it moves into the territory of assault.

Yeah... I like that! Has a certain ring to it...
Will make this my new catch-phrase!
TERRITORY OF ASSAULT!
Is there some way this can become a Dem catch-phrase?
Damn Republicans! Their stupid talking points have created a Territory of Assault!
Gotta say, "Territory of Assault" sure beats the hell outta "Care Bear Alert!" any day!

I think a better statement woudl be "excessive use of subwoofers are Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad for you hearing".
I have one ten inch subwoofer in my Jeep. It's powered by a mid-level amplifier. I don't blare it so that the neighborhood can hear it. I use it to hear the low frequencies in music that my other speakers can't reproduce.
Not everyone who has a car subwoofer is a hoopty punk.

7. I HAD a subwoofer in my vehicle. |
|
Not that it was plugged in or anything. In fact, it was in a box. In the trunk. I just needed a place to keep it until I hooked it up to my computer. Right now, it's under my desk doing double time as a foot massager.

The ex-boyfriend put them in and I didn't realize what a PITA they are. Sad part is, the ones in my car aren't even as bad as the system in his. I swear, I can hear his SUV coming a half-mile away.

We live in the front of a trailer park...all hours of the night, boom, boom, boom. They have to slow down to go over the speed bumps, then they zoom to the next one. We're close to a bump, so we get lengthy serenades sometimes.

I admit it! I do have subs in my car. As a hardcore music geek I like the full sound I get. I actually have two small subs that are tuned to sound really tight rather than that flabby booooommmmmm.....booooommmmmm.....crap.
I think it helps for almost any type of music, but if you're into metal/hard rock a small sub with a tiny amp (around 40w) really helps. For the record, I would never shell out the cash for the rapper-approved 1000w amp with neon, strobelights, tie rack, and fish tank. Then again, I have no urge to own a Land Rover either.

Subs do make a difference in EVERY type of music. Smaller speakers with low power handling capabilities cannot reproduce the lower frequencies like a sub can. You are missing those frequencies in the music without them.
That being said, that trunk vibrating, slappy garbage that most teenagers listen to is bullshit. If I can hear the music in my house, then it's too fucking loud.

19. Cuz the new little cars make no macho engine noise - - |
|
. . .
so the subwoofers sort of replace the dual exaust/glasspack mufflers that would show off the horsepower of the machine . .
Dual or triple 4 barrel carberetors are collectors items now - electronic fuel injection took all that roar and fun away . . .
so now the "power" of the "machine" is it's ability to shatter your eardrums with a maxed out alternator and a melting battery . . .
and as one DUer mentioned - you hear the stereo thumping long before the car arrives in sight
yup - it's a macho thing methinks . . .

20. High Heels damage your feet. |
|
Alpha male gorillas beat their chest and the tone goes lower as the gorilla increases in size.It can be heard further away with increasing size,a large drum can produce more energy than a small drum.
Growling is a sign of aggression as well as pounding on objects,if you challenge an alpha male with aggression you are asserting dominance.Dominance is how the resource and reproductive hierarchy is established and is continually maintained.
A warning avoids actual confrontation which leads to injury and death so the system is used to gradually escalate providing opportunity to withdraw.Size and height alone are indicators of status, alpha primates that receive enough food grow the greatest and simply being large is a warning to challengers who would try to obtain resources.
Loud mufflers,SUVs and elevator shoes are just our way of proving evolution is true.

22. Subwoofers aren't the problem. |
|
They enhance the sound quality of lower ranges, allowing for better enjoyment of the music.
The problem is fools who turn their volume too loud.
Crappy little dime speakers can be obnoxiously loud too.

There's no reason for a subwoofer in a car at all. I agree. In fact, I think it should be illegal to MAKE subwoofers for cars, it should be illegal to install them, it should be illegal even to HAVE them, and illegal to use them.

I think one needs to be exactly as described to have them in the car.
But, i don't want them to be illegal. If they're legal, we have another easy way to identify the self-centered jerks. The Professor

empty country road in the middle of the night, high off your ass, listening to comfortably numb and feeling like you were at both places at once - mostly because of the subs.
No, I don't have subs, but I do have a stock 180w Infinity system that's pretty nice.

28. yep, have 2 in my truck... |
|
2 12" to be exact...
Why?
Reason#1 Because it is against the law to listen to "She's Crafty" by the Beastie Boys without some bass.
Reason#2 I live in Plano Texas and have more than my share of self rightous SUV driving bitches with a W sticker in the back window. I find it very pleasing in an evil sort of way to force them to feel 100db of pure bass while sitting behind them at a light.
