3. If you're going to declare Alan Alda (or anyone, for that matter) as |
|
THE SHIT, you should say why. We're not all tuned in to the same channel. Some of us are watching a hurricane that's coming to visit us Friday night.
Hey, even GD has to have a little fun every now and then. I have noticed that the last few days, GD seemed to be more goofy than normal.

|
...'cause it was the weirdest flamefest I'd ever seen. Both "sides" escalated it to a point it didn't even need to go. It lightened up a bit, but still, the fucker got locked!

I thought it was a joke at first, then I realized there was actually an argument transpiring. I think "surreal" is the perfect description.

16. I think the funniest part was the arguement about the use of the term... |
|
THE SHIT.
as if anyone doesn't know that is positive? Maybe if they live in a cave or just haven't been paying attention for the last twenty or so years...
I was bewildered what he was talking about too, as I am on the west coast, and don't buy TV Guide...

That was definitely the funniest part!
I was expecting a reaction of quasi-embarrassment, but was bewildered to see it escalate into righteous indignation.

23. actually that part confused me |
|
I have never heard that before, as far as I remember, and it sure as shite does not sound positive to me, but I do have a hard time telling the difference between shite and shinola. It boggles the mind when excrement is used as a compliment.
So which is it, have I been living in a cave, or not paying attention? The last 20 years, back to 1985 when I got my BA. I never have had cable TV or a satellite dish, although I have helped manufacture them. In 1987 I lived in the woods, without any electricity or running water, etc. Then I went to graduate school. I remember watching Arsenio Hall and 21 Jump Street. Then I had no TV for about 8 years. Reception was not very good in Wisconsin anyway, and being without TV seemed like a positive good. Then when I moved to Iowa, I got another free TV from my sister via my brother. I remember watching alot of Letterman. Now having moved again to a larger city I can get about ten channels and have seen almost every Seinfeld re-run and, I believe, every Jay and Silent Bob movie. I do not know how I missed it.
It reminds me of 1995 when this girl came to town from upstate NY. She talked about things like mosh pits and dreadlocks and I was clueless. Then I saw both terms in something I was reading less than a week later, so perhaps I had seen them many times and just jumped over them without ever learning what they meant. When I was a high school junior I decided to write down every word I did not understand in the latest Asimov book I was reading (it was "Pebble in the Sky"). I did not think there would be any since I read Asimov all the time without any trouble. I was surprised that there were about a dozen, and figured that if I hadn't been purposely looking for them (to help increase my vocabulary for the SAT) that I would have jumped over them and kept reading. Now ain't that the excrement?

25. Hey man, that's cool. |
|
Obviously, you have very good reason for not knowing. It's just some pop culture vernacular that, honestly, is fading out of use a little bit. Probably peaked around 2K or so.
I suppose that was kind of funny, in and of itself, but the fact that a heated exchange over the merits of "shit" as a complimentary term was just hilarious.

26. sounds like a Sturgeon's Law thingy |
|
According to Sturgeon's Law, 90% of everything is excrement. Therefore it makes no sense to jump on the latest fad and keep up with the latest terms. They are only dust in the wind, or is it howling at the moon? Better to stick with tried and true phrases like "cool" which has been around for decades. Everyone would have understood a post that said "Kitchenwitch is SO COOL" Then again, it is more fun to confuse and aggravate the old fogeys with your new terms. It's like THE BOMB!

27. Can't argue with that, but... |
|
...at the very least, it could prevent you from wasting precious time in an accidental argument.
Not trying to cause confusion, it's just that many of us would never even think that somebody might take that wrong, because we've been so used to it for several years now. Think of it as the edgy, cussword version of "cool".
Don't worry, all the other swears are still swears. "Shit" is the only one that's crossed over into an expression of extreme like and approval. Although, word on the street is that "Mofo" is trying to pull off a cross-over ;)

Nearly everyone knows what it means. The person who called me the shit was 94 years old.
