Racism Against Dat Phan? (Last Comic Standing)
I just watched my first episode of "Last Comic Standing" last night. It's a funny show, a typical reality show with stand-up comics living in a house together and getting booted from the house after various challenges.

Based on what I saw last night, however, it seemed like there was a TREMENDOUS amount of vitriol (near-hate, really) for one of the comics, Dat Phan. The guy seemed funny and focused and intelligent to me, but the others really, really couldn't stand him. They unanimously voted for him to be one of the two for the challenge (the loser has to leave) on the last episode, and it happened again (although this time the expelled housemates voted for him unanimously) on this episode.

Dat Phan again triumphed in the head-to-head face-off (IMO he was way funnier than the other guy, and the audience agreed, 77% to 23%), making him a back-to-back winner. He is now headed to the finals.

For people who've been watching this show, is there a reason he is so despised? Do you think it's racism? Or some other explanation?

I was honestly surprised at the degree of dislike for this guy.

1. Not racism
At least that's my take on it and I've watched all the episodes. Dat Phan said early on that his real goal was to be an actor. Standup comedy it a vehicle for him to his goal. Most of the others have been doing standup for a decade or more, and Dat has been at it for 4 years (I think). They were pissed that he wasn't like them, hadn't paid his dues, his goal was really acting, etc. I think it was Cory that called him a poser. It was at that point that everybody in the house started targeting him.

Also, Dat beat out a really popular comic last week (Dave Mordahl) and a couple of the other comics had gotten really close to Dave, so that further PO'd the comics against Dat. Most thought the guy Dat beat was a better comic, but that Dat performed better the night of the competition.

It's difficult to explain their thinking. I hope I haven't confused things further.

5. That Makes a Lot of Sense
Thanks for the info. I could see why he might've bugged the hell out of them, then.

It's tough coming in at the middle/end! :-)

6. You're No Airhead!
Maybe there wasn't any, based on what MNDem says, just some healthy dislike!

3. I think it's because Dat Phan sucks!
I've watched all the episodes, and I think he is horrible. His routine is not funny, it's uncomfortable.

4. YMMV, I Guess

I thought his routine last night was hilarious, much funnier than the other guy (who I actually thought was trying to be overly chivalric AND chauvinistic...it's almost as if he was pandering to the women, and then caught himself mid-stream and decided he needed to put them down a little bit, or something).

Didn't see him last week.

7. He was better this week
last week was truly awful.

I didn't much like either routine this week. But Dat Phan is such a punk, I was not rooting for him, regardless.
