Should I give my dog canned vegetables? |
|
My dog begs for it all the time.
Yesterday I bought two salt-free Veg-Alls (my wife's favorite is with the salt), just for Teddy.
Just wondering..

1. Might cause bowel trouble |
|
Just off the top of my head, I think you're begging for a case of diarrhea.

My wife has fed Teddy twice with Veg-Alls along with his doggie food, and I've given him green beans before. No problems with bowel movement.
Note to self: Don't give Teddy a piece of candy.

Unless he has some sort of health problem, no reason you shouldn't. :)

Cooked ones only - raw vegetables "are not food"
He eats steamed broccoli with enthusiasm.
No bad side effects (except for maybe a larger "doggie dump" the next day).
I've heard veggies in moderation are good for dogs - which is why they sometimes eat fresh grass.

6. Sure, but they HAVE TO HAVE REAL MEAT..... one of the worst episodes of |
|
Animal Cops on Animal Planet was the horrible, HORRIBLE condition of some cats and dogs that hadn't had meat in years, since their owners were vegans.
The animals were all blind from the vitamin deficiency.

Cat metabolisms require taurine. All cat foods are required to have that, along with a certain amount of ash. They can get that from animal protein but not from the veggie stuff.
Dogs are different, they can thrive on a vegetarian diet AS LONG AS they are getting the necessary vitamins that they need, which usually is added as supplements.

but fresh vegetables are better for both. Don't zap them in the microwave. I knew a dog once that ate up his master's broccolli patch, a bit of overkill. The dog farted for days. My Grandma used to cook up soup bone, meat, grits and veggies for her dogs and gave them a raw egg twice a week from her own hens to give them a glossy coat. It worked. Unfortunately today eggs from caged hens aren't healthy.

9. Don't give grapes to a dog with kidney disease! |
|
I was doing some research on that earlier.
My dog begs for some of my oatmeal in the morning. So I slip her antacid medication in with it.

10. No reason why not.... |
|
We work with rescues, and some of the dogs that come our way are overweight. We routinely substitute green beans for part of the overweight dog's kibble -- fills them up, fewer calories. Works every time.

12. Our dog LOVES fresh green beans and peas from the garden. |
|
When we go into the back yard, she'll grab her toy, and instead of playing, run right over to wherever she last got a 'treat'. She'll eat green beans and peas by the dozen if we'd give them to her. She really likes them better than some meats. She snatches them out of your fingers and sprints away with them and sprints back for more.

15. good dry dog food is better for their teeth |
|
I have 4 dogs, the oldest is 14 and her teeth are perfect.
If i feed them veggies, i use fresh carrots... good for teeth and no runny spots... cheap doggie snaks.
If they are feeling prissy and want better tasting food, i mix some cooking drippings on the dry food, or a little cat food.
Canned veggies... yeech... *I* don't even eat those.

18. Depends on where you live |

If you have lots of stray dogs, or wildlife, in your area, you'll definitely want to keep those vaccines current. (Note that rabies vaccines are a legal requirement in most places.) Not all of the components of the annual vaccines (especially the 5-way ones) have more than a year duration, so you'll need to evaluate your dog's lifestyle and discuss risks/benefits with your veterinarian. Other vaccines, like those for bordetella or Lyme disease, are not necessarily appropriate for all dogs and should only be given to those at risk. If your dog is ill, or has chronic problems (eg metabolic disease or cancer), it might be wise to extend the vaccine interval (ask your vet if this is advisable). PM me if you want more info (I am a veterinarian IRL).
