Yeah, trying to decide on one would be futile.

38. Just started listening to them.
Buying only vinyl of course. Not good with song names, but I'd have to go with the last song on side 1 of the computerworld record.

I must say, they were way ahead of the curve. Plus its interesting to listen to these albums and be able to pick out what other albums/songs were directly influenced by Kraftwerk (mostly industrial/electronic in my collection).

51. Gee, thats a big question!

But here goes:

In industrial I like a great many things. First a foremost I am a Skinny Puppy freak. Unlike a great many puppies, however, I also love NIN. Fond of Wumpscot, Assemblage 23, Hansel & Gretyl, Pigface, Icon of Coil and the like. Not as big on goth, though I like the odd song here and there.

I'm a huge fan of older techno and ambient (stuff from 1990-1998). I love ambient such as Plastikman, Young American Primitive, Seefeel, Australasia etc. Also I like some of the more aggressive techno of that era, what I called 'Terror-Techno' due to its massive assault of sound and speed. I guess its the old LA sound. Also fond of the old hypnotic stuff. Techno nowdays is not as good. Goa-psy and happy-hardcore are piss poor replacements.

I also love circa 1960's loungey-cool music. Dig out your Henry Mancini and lets have some martinis! Old school yodeling country rocks, and does mountain blue-grass. In the miscellaneous category I like anything with Mike Patton, or his Mr Bungle friends (such as the absolutely, un-freaking believable, amazing masterpiece album from Secret Chiefs 3:Book M). Bebel Gilberto is fantastic, and covers the brazilian-sexy category for me. Bollywood music is very cool, along with traditional ragas. I'm not so into death metal anymore, however I do pull out the Entombed, Obituary and Cannibal Corpse on occasion.

Of course I like jazz and classical, but I'm not really a collector here except for maybe some Monk and my one obligatory small-orchestra Messiah.

How's that? Can you tell I get way to excited about music?

:P

edited for rotten spelling

60. I'm not familiar with those.
Thats the problem with me and techno. I've never had any friends who like it, and its not popular around here, so I've had to figure it out myself, so my knowledge is spotty. Bands I know of that would epitomize it for me are UHF, Zombie. I guess the better term is Terrorcore:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrorcore

Let me know if those bands you list would fit the description, because if so my want list just got bigger again (dammit, so much for saving money). Any other good recommendations?

19. Never really cared for 'em
Stack 'em up against a group like Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk seems flat, derivative, and somewhat unimaginative.

They may have been early in the electronica field, but they never seemed to evolve.

But that's just my humble opinion.

But I'm quite partial to "Electric Café" as well. of course it didn't help that it was the theme song for the "Sprockets" sketches on Saturday Night Live.

Big Black did a cool cover of "The Model", too. It was originally released as a single b/w a cover version of "He's a Whore" by Cheap Trick. Very cool (if odd) combination).

More accurately, I like both Big Black's and Snakefinger's versions of that song.

But honestly, I am of the opinion that Kraftwerk's influence on pop/rock music has been negative on the whole.

I know I'm alone on this; that's fine. I'll shut up now.

48. The introduction of synthetic timbres and rythyms, in a nutshell.
They probably did more to influence musicians to shift rock from a player's genre, where the combustion produced by four or five mammals battling it out on real instruments is the locus of attention, to a producer's music, where computers control the rythyms, the timbres are purosefully robotic and the aesthetic is bloodless and sterile, and nothing approaching jam is even orbited around, much less broached. I know that was their point, so me barking and drooling about it now does no good.

But I do hold them to blame for all that horrid synth-pop tinkertoy music, from Depeche Mode to KMFDM to most of today's musicianless hip hop.

49. Well, I guess I hear what you're saying, BUT
electronic musicians DO jam, and it still requires some talent and music skill (oftentimes lots) to produce this kind of stuff. However in specifically kraftwerks case, ya got me ;)

And I effing love 80s new wave (mmmm synthy) and industrial. And noise. I DJ the stuff. So, delicious Kraftwerk and their delicious synths deserve my thanks ;)

59. I love noise too.
Let's find some common ground, shall we?

I like the old stuff on the Vision label from the mid-80's, stuff like Ix-Ex-Splue and 15/16. I dig most of the stuff that was happening in Japan in the early 90's, like WHite Heaven, High Rise, Marble Sheep, etc. Nurse With Wound, Incapacitants, Vermonster, Jandek, etc. also receive many spins on my turntable.

What I DON'T like are programmed machine rythyms and synthoid textures. I dunno, I know I'm the one with the problem. I just never liked those kinds of sounds, even when I was a little kid. I remember hearing Depeche Mode for the first time and laughing hysterically: I thought it was a joke. I had the same reaction the first time I heard Techno.

I dunno, it's just a personal quirk, like my cannibalism. I just can't get enough human entrails on my plate! Does that make me a bad person?

62. Used to love them
Even saw them in concert. They were great! Back in the late 70's when I started buying music, I'd buy only the music you couldn't hear on the radio, except for the local alternative stations (WHFS & WGTB) now and then.

I heard Kraftwerk was going to put together the first album in years - Tour de France, and looked forward to it. Sampling in some shop, it sounded so dated. Perhaps my tastes have evolved.
