Nightly "What is the origin of that phrase?" |
|
Ok folks, tonight is a pretty easy one (NO GOOGLING OR SEARCHING).
Where did the expression "Saved by the bell" come from?
There was not winner last time.
The reward tonight is the journey. <little Zen thing goin'>

2. Fear of premature burial |
|
I believe in olden times people were buried(sometimes) with a bell that they could ring in case they were buried alive?

I must say this is one of my favorites <I am so sick...gotta get a real life - anybody?>.
"Saved by the bell" originated as you said during olden times when there were instances of people being bured alive. So when a person was buried, a bell was erected w/ a string/cord to the "dead" person, so s/he could ring it.
Now you know why I want to be cremated.

Was this a common problem, being buried alive, or just a superstition?

In the days before modern medicine, often people who were in a comatose state appeared dead, and were sometimes buried before the mistake was revealed.

4. Yes, the coffins had a rope |
|
going from the inside to a bell on top of the grave. If you were buried alive you just tugged on the rope. In fact, George Washington was so afraid of being buried alive that he had a statement in his will that said he was not to buried until at least 2 months after he was pronounced dead.

where the term "graveyard shift" comes from because they paid people to sit in the cemetaries at night and listen for the bells.
