Does anyone know if anyone was 'left behind' due to lack of means
for this hurricane?

Again, I am feeling helpless.

1. It seems a lot of people in secondary areas have been left behind..
Houston is a target, but far enough inland, I suppose, to not be as devastates as NO....

There were people in Houston, just like NO, who wanted to get out but will not be able to simply because they have no means and no money....

We have a Caste System in the country..... And we are seeing it played out right before our eyes....

If we do nothing to erase this hellish, brutish, unchristian capitalism that has been resurrected by greedy men and women who seek redemption through wealth, then we deserve all we get........

3. I just heard there are people in Galveston
(on CNN) - The mayor said they're pretty much stuck there, now, and they'll probably open a shelter somewhere.

I dunno.
Get in a car, which you may or may not have.
Fill it with gas, which you may or may not afford - that is, if you can find any.
Get on a congested interstate system that until a few hours ago, was still open to two-way traffic.
Find a place to stay: friends, relatives, hotels....

If you're poor and alone, apparently you're dead.

5. I know.
This is a battle for our collective souls. The ultimate question is "does everybody count, or not?"

 at least we have each other here.

6. Very true
Where else can a witch and a Christian minister embrace each other and be friends...

This is really testing everything I believe in...I am certain my faith will come through intact, but it is sure painful going through it.

7. Earlier this week, I was feeling very uneasy.
Now I think I know why. My heart is breaking.
It really saddens me that my supposed "brothers and sisters" are so hateful to people who aren't like them.

One of my favorite bumperstickers:

9. Not much more.
When I see what's happening in the world, and see our extremely limited resources, I weep.

What depresses me is that our church people, bless them, are so compassionate, they give from their hearts to help the victims of the storms... but they don't have very much to give. Right now, we don't have enough money to pay expenses - and I wonder how much longer they will be able to afford me, so to speak.

Most churches are not mega-churches, and very few are swimming in money. If politicians think the churches are going to take up the slack, they are in for a big surprise. We don't have anything to spare.

10. Well I'm a former UU Board Member....
And in that church, that is next to being divine...

I read and here far too much justification for the wealth of this country and little to no explanation for the growing poverty except that since we all have the same opportunities, failure, lack of wealth, must truly lie at the feet of those who have none....

Run sentence alert but hey it's 4:20 in the AM

13. almost certainly
i thought houston had 3-5 m. ppl, they said 1.8 million evac'd

many could not tolerate sitting in traffic for 12 hrs or longer in 98 degree heat, this will kill a certain percentage of ppl

& i guess we all know what happens now when you put oxygen tanks together w. busses

there is no way to evac completely a city the size of new orleans, it was never going to happen for houston

a bright spot is the storm will prob. not direct hit there, altho i would not like to be in port arthur rt now
