My afternoon dream of Sweet Sirius
Maybe it was the pastrami sandwich. Maybe the garlic. But my postprandial nap produced a dream of a discussion with the late, great Sirius P. Wirius (as I called him). Sirius was the star dog. He died in my arms on August 25.

As some of you remember, Sirius was trained to poop in Dick Cheney’s front yard on Euclid Avenue in Highland Park (Dallas, TX). He also attended the pre-2004 election anti-war rally on the Mockingbird Lane bridge near SMU. On the day that Cheney was operated on and a major anti-war rally was in progress in DC, Sirius decided to stop in and talk.

Sirius bodes no ill will towards Cheney. He only pooped in Cheney’s yard for the liver treats I gave him. Sirius told me that he thinks Cheney and Bu$h might be the cause of my high blood pressure and possible TIA. I think that is partially correct.

Sweet Sirius regretted not being in Washington, DC, today. He was, after all, a northern Virginia boy with many walks on the mall and swims at Jones Point under his belt. He had his teeth cut as an anti-war protestor in Dallas. He was almost close enough to Bu$h, once, to bite him on the leg.

Sirius said that the Rainbow Bridge is absolutely full of refugees from earth-storms. But, he stoically pointed out, there is always room for more. The unlucky pets need help from kind people, Sirius said (hinting?).

Sirius started in on Nick-Nick’s total takeover of the place (which is not true .. Nick-Nick still mourns Sirius). I was snorting and sweating, and then the dryer buzzer went off.

Weird dream. True story.

Sweet Sirius

1. I have been told that heaven is a place
where every dog you ever owned comes running to greet you. It is a pleasant thought regardless of one's religious beliefs.

3. DemoTex, you might be ready to read Eminent Dogs, Dangerous Men
by Donald McCaig. Deals with finding a replacement dog...Not that Sirius is replaceable, but there is mention of another dog named Sirius in the book. Interesting read, you won't be disappointed.

Peace, from another dog lover....

5. Thanks BrotherBuzz, I'll look for that book.
I would really like to drive down to the Gulf Coast (actually, I just did) where there are so many waif doggies, when I can handle another dog. We are selling a condo and buying a house next Friday. I can't get the second dog until we have the house and yard set up for both of them. But it WILL happen, and soon. It will be another rescue. Only way to go, in my book.

Nick-Nick (Rescued at Dallas SPCA on Bastille Day - 7/14 - 2003)
I should have named him "Tongue."

7. Rescue dogs and the SPCA are 'de best!
We have a SPCA abused/rescued border collie, Sally, that came with a lot of special needs. The SPCA is doing a great job finding the right homes for their charges. They grilled us about the difficulties owning working dogs, but I guess we passed muster when they found out she would be replacing another working dog, Billie-Girl, our old sweet blue heeler. It's been a good go with the Sally and I'm happy to report she is finally finding peace in the world, athough she is still trying to convince us that rounding up tennis balls we toss sucks compared to herding the band of sheep she desires.

Our house applauds your plan!!!

4. Hi DemoTex. Sorry about your Sirius.
I'll soon be putting up a plaque at the animal adoption facility where I volunteer honoring Sirius, the search and rescue dog that died when the towers came down on 9/11. I'll send you a pic when it's up.
