Poll question: Chicago gathering: Oct. 9 or 16
These seem to be the most workable dates from the previous post.

Please vote only if you plan on attending. Also, post your name so I can keep you updated. I love the interest shown by people who have not attended in the past.

Also, where to have it. Celtic Crossings and Moody's are standbys, but I think many want to try something different.

So, where's a good place to hang on a Sunday afternoon? Availablity of parking and proximity to public transportation definite considerations.

1. The sixteenth.
On the 9th, I'm liable to still be hungover from thiss big party I'm going to on the 7th.

Is there a number I could call as we get closer to the day to finalize everything, get directions, etc.?

2. susang? You know all the good bars in town.
We need a large place, easily accesible, good beer, not too noisy. You know the drill.

Either date is fine by me, so I won't vote.

26. Late, as usual
Sorry, very bad back day. Couldn't sit in front of the computer for too long a time at once. :-(

As was mentioned below, Lotties is a good choice, as is Lemmings (on Damen), Map Room on Hoyne, just west of Damen and Green Eye Lounge, under the Blue Line el tracks at Western Avenue. These bars are all in the same general area of Bucktown.

Corcoran's in Old Town (right across from Second City) might be a good choice. Village Tap on Roscoe (in Roscoe Village, of course!) is nice too, if a little narrow. I love Black Beetle, but it's not really near any major public transit, other than the Chicago bus line.

My favorite bar, Cleo's, is too crowded on Sunday's, so I wouldn't recommend it.

3. Either's good.
And, for me, north is better, but I'll deal with whatever, as I am likely the only one coming in from this far north...

On the 16th, you could lift a glass to something that happened the previous day. ;)

7. How are we gonna find a place like that?
;)

BTW- I'm happy to say, that I imbibed copious amounts of Guinness this past weekend. And a few bourbons.

And I feel great today. Guinness for strength.

9. Did you vote for a date?
Or, would either work for you or are you just not attending.

Copious... hmmm... with a word like that, you must already have recovered from the hangover.

10. Either is OK.
Though it would be my hope that we gather in a lighter, more open place. One with food.

Actually, I didn't have a hangover at all. A few glasses of water during, after and a couple of tylenol before bed and I'm good to go.

8. Not Voting, Because Either Is OK
However, it does depend on wife's health. If she feels well, we'll both be there. And, i know it won't matter which Sunday to her either. But, if she's feeling poorly, there is no day that would be good.

So, just count us as a possible but for either day. Fingers crossed!

18. Sounds interesting and promising.
"A bar with a colorful past, Lottie's is a former gambling hall, prostitution den and strip tease joint. Legend has it that Lottie was born a hermaphrodite. ..."

I trust that you've been there and find it suitable. How would the parking be in that area on a Sunday?

19. I was there once, at night for a quick one.
Parking wouldn't be too bad on a Sunday afternoon, I suspect.

And it's just off the Kennedy at Armitage, so it's easy to get to.

Edited on Mon Sep-26-05 07:44 PM by greatauntoftriplets
:) My father used to have a customer at Damen and Shakespeare...a gas station and the guy owned cabs. I bet the place is long gone.

On edit: Lottie's has Guinness!!!! :D

27. I used to go there a lot
Was even a regular at one point and knew a couple of the bartenders back in the early nineties. I don't go there much any more. Gentrification has done horrible things to great bars, if you get my drift. ;-)

21. Parking on a Sunday isn't too bad around that area...
It's my neck of the woods. It's pretty doable... none of the streets around there are permit parking, so it leaves the parking situation pretty open. And then the blue line is but a mere walk away.

28. Actually
Much of that area has been quietly switching to residential permit parking, block by block. Wabansia's is slowly being eating up, as are most of the North/South streets that are parallel to Cortland, like Winchester and Honore. Luckily, many of them went with 6PM-6AM permits

34. hmmm...
Maybe since I am technically Logan Square, this is not the case for my little patch of the woods. I suppose I am tucked a little bit west of where this bar is.

But you're right... I see this changing pretty quickly.

35. I'm in Humboldt Park
But I have reason to be in that area all the time, as I used to live on Elk Grove (a little one block long street south of North Ave)& Milwaukee. Wicker Park is becoming so much like Lincoln Park that eventually, parking is going to be impossible.

and people wanted a change of pace. And, if you can't sit on the patio, it's just too dark inside.

Hope you will still come even if we pick a different location.

The Chicago gathering will be the afternoon - ? of Sunday, Oct. 16.

Next, let's narrow down the location. We have several suggestions upthread. What's the consensus?

That's where I met Susang and prolesunited and BatBoy. So it does have some history, but like you say.....no food.

It's a good place for a nightcap, but maybe not the best for a gathering such as this. I am all for trying Lotties. I'm intrigued by the sexual ambiguity of Lottie.
