Is anyone handy with the iPod?
To do recorded interviews and other such things for truthout, my Mac-using boss bought me an iPod with Windows-friendly software. The software package includes AudibleManager and Musicmatch jukebox. The device has a cradle and a microphone, and I was able to download the version 2.1 software, which then fed into the iPod. Using the handy-dandy microphone, I was able to record a little 30-second sound file.

I am having problems transferring the audio file on the iPod to my PC. I'm thinking the download is automatic, but I can't find it. It plays fine on the iPod, so I know it's there. Further, whenever the iPod is in the cradle with the computer on, the iPod screen flashes this DO NOT DETATCH symbol and doesn't allow me to utilize it. When I close my laptop, it goes into sleeper mode, and the DO NOT DETATCH symbol disappears.

What am I doing wrong?

7. iTunes sound files do not download from iPod to computer
for that you need a utility (some freeware ones are available).

I use one called Podestal to get songs off the iPod and onto my Powerbook. Google Podestal for a starter. I'll see if I can find anything else for you.

Moving the files has no bearing on connecting or disconnecting your iPod. Sorry, I don't know how that works on Windows machines. It's very different on OS X, which is a Unix OS.

But if you recorded your sound file into your iTunes library, you'll need a utility to move it onto your PC.

9. then you will need a utility to move it onto your PC
iPod doesn't store the individual songs (sound files) in actual discreet files. On the Mac, there are several free- and shareware utilities that allow you to move songs (or sound files) from the iPod to the computer.

You install this utility on your PC and it lets you look at the iPod as a remote drive and you can see the sound files within a directory structure. Then you can just drag and drop the file you need from the iPod "drive" to the PC's hard drive.

I'm searching for a Windows version of one of these utilities for you. My iPod references predate the Windows version.

15. That downloaded just fine
I think I'm having a Pod connectivity issue; the two machines aren't speaking to each other.

12. Run a jack from the iPod to the PC audio in.
Play what you have recorded, and record it on your PC.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
good software.

Take it down to radio shack.

14. this might work
If your PC has an audio in that is not USB, and you have recording software, you could take the audio out of the iPod using the headphone jack, run it into the audio in on your PC and re-record it on the PC.

I'd still recommend downloading the utility I linked to above and moving the files from iPod to PC.

Good luck!

21. No shouldnt have to do this. . .
Will, the iPod can function as an external hard disk. . .I do believe you have to turn that function on in the MusicMatch software or iTunes software, as it is not the default. But at anyrate, it can mount up as an external disk -- see my post below.

18. Coming to this thread late, but
At the risk of asking a dumb question, Will, are you running the Windows version of iTunes on your PC? If so (and if the Windows version shares this feature with the Mac version I know so well), once your iPod is connected to your computer via the charging dock you can set iTunes to see the iPod as a standard FireWire hard drive. Just click on the iPod icon in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window - you should then get another window wherein you can change these iPod settings. In FireWire mode files can be transferred back and forth between iPod and computer as with any external drive.

Lastly, use the iPod 'Eject' command in iTunes to safely break the connection between computer and iPod. Once ejected, that 'Do not disconnect' warning on your iPod should disappear.

Hope this helps, Will.

19. detaching "connected" hardware
first, let me say that i don't know anything at all about the iPod or any specialized software that supports the iPod ...

However, for any devices connected to your PC, e.g. a digital camera, i have an icon in my system tray (the cluster of icons next to the clock) that is designed to allow you to safely disconnect a device ... the icon looks like an arrow (<--) over a flat rectangle ...

clicking this might solve the problem with your "DO NOT DETACH" symbol ... when you click the icon, a list of connected devices is displayed ... it might include your cd-rom drive and a modem card (and maybe your iPod) ... click the iPod line to stop that device and then you should safely be able to disconnect the iPod ...

hope this helps ...

20. Will, check w the mic manufacturer or read the mic's manual
I am guessing it is the Belkin Voice Recorder for iPod? (Apple doesn't make a microphone for ipod)

Maybe not the Belkin, but there should be a description in the manual that came with the microphone on how to get your file. Or check w their website.

It may be a very simple thing -- iPods can be used in what's called firewire disk mode, where basically the iPod shows up as an external disk drive.

If you are having trouble connecting yr ipod and computer, check out Apple troubleshooting site at http://www.info.apple.com/usen/ipodwin/

I know that I needed firewire updates from Microsoft for my 98 machine to see firewire external drives, and I hear that there are updates for XP as well.

Probably not necessary for your current problem, but after you have it solved do get iTunes for Windows. . .it is much better than musicmatch

Once you get past this hump, here are some cool ipod sites that have tips and productivity freeware and shareware software for iPod

23. Will, Mac has great tech support free: just call them
There is a support link off the applestore.com website. They took my call and I don't even own an ipod or a MAC-- I just wanted to know (on a technical level) which products would do what with a windows software emulator.

Give it a try...

I think someone else touched upon it pretty well -- try mounting it as a removable hard disk via cracking open iTunes for Windows or MusicMatch. I'm almost positive there's an option in there.

If the two devices aren't speaking to each other, reset both the iPod and your computer (resets on iPods are done by pressing down Menu and the Play button at the same time and holding for five seconds, or at least that's how it worked with the first-generation iPods). Take the cables all out and plug them back in, and try again. Failing that, give Apple's tech support an angry phone call.

That's my take. Good luck.

_C

Edit: If it's new, I'd suggest hitting up Apple's website for stuff like driver updates. Those usually solve a lot of issues (like, say, not being able to mount) pretty quick. Good luck!

I have to treat it like an external hard drive, and once I did, it all worked fine. Thanks for the help, everyone.
