Steve Jobs is one of the main proponents of Intelligent Design!
And it's been working pretty well for him. I wouldn't mind more manufacturers pushing Intelligent Design.

And, as a Mac devotée, I agree! (though this should probably be in the Lounge...)

You may have wanted to put this in the lounge.

BTW I'm a big Mac fan and our IT guy just bought a Mac. My Techies friends are now giving the Mac OS some begrudging respect.

5. sorry computers should be commodities not premium products
these cheap machines in turn should operate with cheap or free software unencumbered by the restraints of intellectual property laws.

From an artistic and vive viewpoint I can see the appeals of Macs but the true class/economic concerns of the left should be in opposition to them.

10. What is the Mac equivalent of an Athalon 64?
I doubt it is cheaper. Curvy cases and neat colors are a useless affectation that serves in no way to further the utilitarian nature of a personal computer, which should be crunching numbers.

Marketing and advertising create false value and are an unfortunate side effect of capitalism.

12. Yeah, and we should all live in communes and ride bycycles
I'm an artist and do not use a computer to crunch numbers. I would die in the gray world of "utilitarian computers."

Numerous graphic programs are available on the PC platform that factoring in the reduced hardware costs would accomplish what you need to.

The ProTools audio application is excellent on Mac, but there is no reason why a more optimized PC version could not be released. Most likely this is not done because of the self-perpetuating inertia generated by an established user group.

Finally we should be riding bicycles because there is no way in hell hemp bio-diesel will save us from the ravages of peak oil.

and Windows XP is a very tiresome operating system to use.

Using Mac OS is like using a hammer to hit a nail.
Using Windows OS often feels like using a pair of pliers to hit a nail.

JMHO

But this is a good website to do some comparisons. . .

And ON EDIT: every version of Linux I have used seems like a misguided imitation of Windows UI, designed by committee.

IMHO

15. Ah. You are misinformed, my friend.
Macs are Unix machines now and next year will be using dual core Intel chips.

Just the fact that Macs have no viruses or adware to deal with makes them a lot more utilitarian than Windows.

18. In 10 years of owning my own computer I have only had one virus
the monkey A virus. Am I just luckly?

Also attacking Microsoft for its poor security issues in no way addresses the hardware cost argument I put forward. There are alternatives to Wintel monopoly as we all know.

21. The curvy cases and neat colors were for the consumer level
computers, not the pro models. The curves of the Sawtooth style made them easy to carry around. The placement of the motherboard on the side door made maintaining and updating a breeze. The beauty had a purpose.

Jonathan Ives and Steve Jobs understand, that grace and beauty is important . The attractive child is treated better than the homely child. We are attracted to beauty and reject ugliness.

I remember how I loved using Campagnolo tools. There was a beauty, a feel, a balance that was quite appealing. I see the same attention to design with Apple. I love the curved soft lines of the Pro keyboard. The feel and response of the keys is quite pleasant. It is no less beautiful than a Campagnolo crank tool.

That much maligned one button mouse becomes a thing of beauty in the hands of a graphics designer. Watching the drawing of bezier curves is like watching a dance. There is a solid feel and sound of the mouse.

When you are creating, why settle for ugly tools. Maybe ugliness is OK for crunching numbers and counting beans, but not doing layout for a children's book.

9. I'd like to point out....also...
Edited on Mon Sep-26-05 08:03 PM by BlueJazz
..the the case for a Mac (even though they're excellent computers)
is getting weaker with each passing year.
In the past, increases in computing power were fairly slow so buying a high quality unit made some sense, in the fact that, you could upgrade it every so often.
Now...the prices have dropped so much for PC's and the advances in CPU's and RAM are coming SO damn fast, it's rather silly to buy a 2000 dollar Mac and have it obsolete in 6 months...

Just my Techy Opinion....Yours my Vary...
