If the idiot who played Tasha Yar had a tenth of the skill of Starbuck, |
|
I don't think I would have hated the character of Yar so much.
And as I've been watching BG this week (bought the season 1 DVD), this is perhaps unfair of me, but I keep drawing comparison between Yar and Starbuck - probably because their characters were so similar, women in typically male occupations, both blond, both youngish, both roguish and tough...
Except that the woman who plays Starbuck doesn't fucking suck as an actor like Denise Crosby, and when she cries, it feels real; when she gets ready for combat, it feels real; when she's playing cards and smoking a cigar it feels real.
Yar felt fake in every line she ever delivered, except that hologram of her they played after she died.

1. The hologram was the best acting she did on the |
|
entire series. Her character was awful. I've always heard that they wrote her out of the show because she wanted top billing, more lines and alot more money. Of course, she was willing to take any role once she realized that they could get rid of her and no one cared.

2. I heard they asked her to leave because she did a Playboy |
|
(or something similar) shot. Though in the commentaries that come with the DVDs of the series, no one makes mention of that, and Denise seems to come across as someone who wishes she hadn't left the show, and says it in a way that makes it seem it was her decision.
But you're right, her acting was awful, and her character was awful.
I was so glad when she got killed, and I'm glad they didn't bring her back. And though I think it was cool what they did with her daughter on the show - that was a bit of brilliance coming up with that! - I wish they had found someone else to play the role, because she fucks it all up with her inability to act.

3. I remember the Playboy thing too. |
|
It seems like it was more the money than anything else. I used to read the fan mags when it was on and I can remember her bitching in interviews about wanting more lines. In the interviews she came across as wanting to be THE STAR of the show and being angry that she wasn't.
I always wished that she had never gone back on the show in any capacity. I couldn't stand her from Farpoint on.

25. Ha! That reminds me of a story... |
|
I did this movie a couple of years ago, and the lead actress was a total pill. Completely high-maintainence, rude, self-centered, demanding... you name it. And she was, basically a "nobody" (as much as I hate that term).
So, I looked her up on IMDB, and her biggest screen credit was in "Children of the Corn VII".
When I caught her being mean to a costumer, I asker her, very loudly, if she had been treated any better "...on 'Children of the Corn Seven' or any of the other worldwide blockbusters which have given you license to be a total bitch?". That shut her up for the rest of the shoot.

I didn't even know there was a Children of the Corn II, let alone that it managed to get to VII.
Obnoxious people piss me off. Deepak Chopra is one of them, too. What a dick.

I'm glad you are liking the show! I didn't see any of it until I bought the DVD, and I am glad I took the risk to buy it - the show's bloody great!

8. Do you mean Dirk Benedict or that fembot on that daft remake? |
|
Yar was passable; at least she was rounded and had depth. (character roundeness and depth). Starbuck Mk II was lifeless. Dirk Benedict "reprising" the role would have been infinitely better. And even then, the writing of the character needs to be addressed to.
Of course, I gave up on Remake Galactica after 4 episodes into the series. It's got the feel of latter-day bermantrek, only more stale.

|
I'm surprised you have such a negative reaction to it.
I'm loving it! I think the writing is top notch, the acting is great, the story-line is fantastic. Not at all the dreckish tired cliche crap that was the first series.

11. Kara Thrace (Starbuck) is an awesome character. |
|
I love how she talks to herself and at moments, how vulnerable. Great acting by Katie Satoff (or something like that). Starbuck is someone I would like as a friend, but wouldn't be able to hang out with very often because we wouldn't have the same interests.

but she sucks as an actor, and her character was just fucking dumb. Should never have been allowed on Star Trek.

He was supposed to be fully functional and programmed in all of the arts of lovemaking. And he's a machine that would be able to last much longer than any man.
Come on, when you think about it, that would have been awesome. She got the best of both worlds, the lucky bitch.

19. well they alread had Troi and Doc Crusher |
|
for the babe interests. You can only have so many people who repeat whatever the computer says. Crusher was the mom of the ship and Troi the on again off again love interest for Will, so what was left for Yar to do? Wasn't Worf the muscle all along or was he her replacement? I did not watch that show very much.

15. The first season of TNG in general sucked |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-27-05 12:41 AM by WildEyedLiberal
I loved TNG, but seriously, the first season blew. And as insignificant as Yar's character was, her death scene was AWFUL. She died the way an anonymous red shirted ensign dies, not the way one of the main cast members dies. It was so anticlimactic and horrible, but then again, as much as I love it, Star Trek does tend to fuck up what should be meaningful death scenes.

24. I've been watching TNG on DVD |
|
So I've been reliving all those awful Yar moments - I was so relieved when she was killed off because every time she had a major plotline, the show stank. She is a lousy actor - no doubt about it. Right now, I'm on the episodes with her Romulan daughter Sela and she's just as awful there as she was as Yar (hardly believable that some Romulan was consumed with lust for her - I would think he'd want to blast her out of existence just for being obnoxious but what do I know?).
I haven't seen any of the new BG - perhaps that will be the next adventure.

And yet, Patrick Stewart calls her a great actor in the commentary section.
