Music and age
Does anyone here listen to a song and feel either old or completely isolated from current popular music? I've just bought a Rhapsody subscription and was listening to older stuff, "older" being about 1993. I was just hit with the sudden realization that most of the music on my playlist was made prior to 1995-96. Actually, most of it is older. I'm 33, but I suddenly feel old. Some samples:

Screaming Trees, "Nearly Lost You", 1992
Public Image Limited, "Rise", I guess about 1982
Clash, "English Civil War", no idea
Revolting Cocks, "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?", 1993
Smithereens, "Only a Memory", 1988
Mad Season, "River of Deceit", 1995
Primus, "My Name is Mud", 1993
This Mortal Coil, "Song to the Siren", 1983
Nine Inch Nails, "Closer", 1994
Talking Heads, "Psycho Killer", 1977
Gary Numan, "Cars", 1979
The Creatures, "The Prettiest Thing", 1999

I just honestly don't care for most new music. It all invariably sounds like it was recorded by the same band, has no originality, and comes across as vapid noise.

if it all sounds the same anyway... ive plugged em before... ill plug em again... go get yourself some Rage Against the Machine, even if you dont like metal lol.

most of the stuff i listen to dates back to hendrix (a good chunk of my music library, alot of the live concert cds and raw studio tapes), led zeppelin, ect... then a jump is made to some mid 80s REM stuff and then it works it's way slowly to the present with some bands of all different types of music, some of them released only last month or so...

2. I must be really old.....
The only 2 songs on your list that I have ever even HEARD OF are "Psycho Killer" and "Cars" -- and I never liked "Cars" - I still think of it as a real "new" song. My era of popular music enjoyment peters out pretty quickly after 1980.

Listen to what you like.

People worry about their age too much.

4. Well put....
Don't worry about being in touch or out of touch, just listen to what you like. Obsessing about keeping up with the latest trends just means you're a different kind of conformist.

I'm 41 and I still listen to new stuff as well as enjoy the old.

I just listen to the prog rock station for a little while, or one of the college stations, and find a few things I like, for instance Coldplay and Evenessence. I don't believe in being stuck in the past.

7. If all you're tuning into is commercial radio...

...then your attitude is quite understandable. If your neck of the woods has a college station, check it out some time. Who knows, you may just hear some new music that appeals to you!

9. I agree with the college radio station suggestion.
there is a whole world of music out there. I love jazz, and world music. I do like classical. You can only hear them on public stations like the college radio stations.

There are some fine African musicians out there that are doing some really ass-kicking music. Same for the Mideast and South Asia.

do something daring. If you need a primer on who to check out, ask in a different thread. I love Brazillian jazz. It has a great groove. North African, on through south Asia is where you go for the best drummers in my opinion. If you like a beat, if you want passion, that's where to look. The music is extremely sexy.

8. It all invariably sounds like it was recorded by the same band
I know what you mean. I can hardly tell the difference between the London Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. And what's the difference between late Haydn and early Mozart? It all sounds the same.

And is it my imagination or is Bryan Adams just a clone of Rod Stewart?

Personally, there's not much beyond the mid 90's that worth listening to, except maybe Norah Jones and Avril, who's kind of borderline OK. They just don't make 'em like the Doors and Guns N Roses anymore. :(

For the record, I'm 58. Yeah, I'm starting to feel a little old too.
