yet another reason to dislike Marilyn vos Savant...
from the crappiest infotainment magazine ever printed and served up in my sunday paper... and I quote...

"Nothing else you can wear will ever make you feel as warm as a wedding band."

I don't know, Marilyn, I spent some time in Buffalo, NY, and I sure as shit chose my down coat over my wedding ring when I had to shovel the walk! Fuck off.

4. I hear hormones during pregnancy make you roast, but
she takes her conservative crap too far sometimes. She's probably smart enough to not show up at a NOW meeting...

6. Nothing makes me itch more than my wedding ring.
Which is why I haven't worn it in about 25 years. I'd hate for my husband to ask me where it is, because I don't have the faintest idea.

Don't feel any less married for the lack of it, either.

30. Me too!
And I thought I was the only one!

I haven't worn it for at least 13.

We've been together for 28 years, and married for 21-1/2.

12. She made some dumb comment about Picasso's work, too...
in response to a question from a reader. I think she had to back off later, if I recall correctly, because she didn't know what she was talking about.

26. She's got the highest IQ ever used as a marketing tool
IIRC it's 235 or something like that. There have been people who scored higher on IQ tests than that, but IQ test results are normally considered confidential, unless the test-taker (or her parents) decides to contact the Guinness Book of World Records for some publicity.

Vos Savant doesn't have the highest IQ in the world--she's just the loudest about it.

10. So...
...the next time it is -60 with the windchill here in northern MN all I need is to put my wedding band on, and I will be okay? In the same vein during the summer, when I need to cool off do then take off my wedding band, because it is making me warm?

:sarcasm:

16. I really must have missed something
Possibly because my entire knowledge of Ms. vos Savant is that she is the smartest person in the world (which I got from Dilbert books).

But why is the idea that someone finds marriage to be a good thing so offensive?

17. Yup you missed it.
Not picking on you, I'm just wanting to make a point.

She scored the highest on IQ tests. That doesn't make her the smartest. And it most certainly does not make her the wisest.

Why is it offensive for her to think marriage a good thing? So offensive that the OP felt necessary to tell her to go fuck herself?

29. "nothing else" is crap...
Edited on Mon Sep-26-05 04:37 PM by fleabert
as if marriage is (or should be) the be all, end all goal for everyone. and coming from a woman, i find it exceptionally offensive. worthy of a 'go fuck yourself' to anyone who would say it.

Not everyone wants to be married. and how in the hell is a wedding band supposed to make me feel warm? What about folks who can't afford wedding bands? are they any less married.

she's a twit, and a right winger twit at that. she routinely offends me, this is just the first time I felt like putting fingers to keyboard about it.

why does that bother you, is my question.

and, btw, i didn't find it 'necessary' to tell her to go fuck herself, I just enjoyed it.

19. Idea of marriage is not offensive; idea that marriage is everything, is
It is not the idea of marriage that is offensive, it is the idea that marriage is so overwhelmingly all encompassing and perfect that is offensive. Her analogy is simply nuts. It perpetuates the idea that romance strikes once and lasts a lifetime without work, i.e. all it takes is the wedding ring. It is the hard work of building and maintaining a relationship that keeps it warm. Also there is the idea that the wedding ring and all the "ownership" baggage that is attached to it is the overriding concept.

20. Frankly it sounds to me like you are reading a lot into that quote
1. How do you know she isn't including all that hard work of building and maintaining a relationship in her statement? How do you know she doesn't assume that her readers would understand that a successful marriage takes work.

2. The Wedding Ring, like all symbols, has doznes of possible meanings. One meaning is ownership - but is that the one she is thinking of? Is that the one most people would think of? "Yes there's nothing like the warmth of knowing I belong to someone else."

21. She's living proof the I.Q. tests
are total horseshit.

Another person whose I.Q. is touted all over the place is right-wing KGO host "Dr." Bill Wattenberg, brother of right-wing think tank flak Ben Wattenberg, who must be the most ignorant individual on the planet.

God help us of these two people are the standards of intellect in this world.
