Is this the EYE OF GOD -- or something posing as
Edited on Tue Sep-27-05 11:39 AM by Radio_Lady
The Eye of God? (I'm so suspicious of everything these days... anybody want to tell me what this is?)

"This is (Edit note: supposed to be) a translation of the Hebrew text accompanying the photo, for those who do not read Hebrew:
This photo was taken with the aid of NASA telescope, and it only happens every 3000 years. It is called the eye of G-d. A lot of miracles happened to those that gazed upon this, so make a wish, even if you do not believe in it and see what happens, what changes in your life. Send this to seven people you would like to bestow well wishes. Do not keep it to yourself -- "

Jesus, I hate Hebrew chain letters and chain email. But it's bad luck to be superstitious!!!!

2. snopes.com says it is true!
From:

http://www.snopes.com/photos/space/eyeofgod.asp

"Origins: This is a real photograph of the Helix Nebula, although it's technically not a single photograph but rather a composite image formed from several photographs taken by NASA's orbiting Hubble Space Telescope and a land-based telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona.

This image was NASA's "Astronomy Picture of the Day" for 10 May 2003. The picture's "Eye of God" appellation appears to have been a title coined by an admirer of the photo due to the nebula's resemblance to a human eye, not something designated by NASA."

OK. Frankly, I like it when I answer my own questions. But many people think I have multiple personality disorder. Isn't that right, Eve?

5. Helix nebula
The so-called eye of God is a different nebula shot with the Hubble. This one is visible to back yard observers.

Can't speak to the writings.

or less --

Who are we?

Why are we here?

Where are we going?

Subject for Paul Gaugin's famous painting. He didn't even use a telescope. "Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?"

Thanks for posting this link. I could rattle around in it all afternoon, but I really do have work to do. (Not that any of it matters in the grand scheme of things...)

9. Beautiful photos: kicking this for the evening crowd.
Gallery and movies -- you could spend the night looking at these.

Thanks for the link, Lilyhoney. What a glorious name!

11. thanks for posting that website
I have seen the Eye of God picture earlier this year and, it passed through my group with out the hebrew or the chain mail "threat" It was just taken to be a great photo and the name seemed appropriate whether it is or not...just looks like that so, why not call it that?

10. I dunno. Looks like a bunch of stars to me, so I'm not
going to get real worked up about it.

And I'm certainly not going to believe that a picture of a bunch of stars has any kind of power to grant me a wish...call me cynical if you want to.
