But I don't know how to change it. Training one's mind to look at the positives isn't easy at all.

is this something that comes natural or how do you do it? I truly want to know how. I read a quote on another board that said," happiness is not in having." Ok then what is it? It's got to be more than a positive outlook on things.

27. For me, I made a choice. |
|
There was a precise moment in my life when I decided that I wanted to be happy. I wanted to enjoy life. I was going to prioritize having fun and feeling good about what I was doing. That one choice led to a series of choices. I left a relationship that wasn't good for me. I left a career that wasn't good for me. I set standards for what I would accept and what I would do. Ten years later, I love what I do for a living. I'm married to a wonderful man (tho' I can still find things to complain about ;-) ) I have only a few friends, but none of them are crazy-makers. And best of all, I have a beautiful son.
It may sound selfish, but if something doesn't support me and my goals, I don't have time for it. And I'm not afraid to hurt people's feelings. If someone is going to be hurt because of a choice I make for me own mental and physical well being, that person is just going to have to take responsibility for letting themselves feel hurt. It just doesn't have anything to do with me. I do not have to absorb other people's negative energy; that's not what friendship is.

37. See, I scored a "neutral" 48 |
|
10 years ago, I would have put myself in your position. I own a very successful (commercially) organic produce farm. My husband trains horses, very successfully. Yet....
Yet, at 43 years of age, I did everything possible to be in a different position at this point in time. And NOW, I am miserable. This lifestyle is not at all what I thought it would be.;
I: -left corporate america to become an organic farmer. -ditched the negative, type-A, corporate guy for the earth-centric, positive guy -focused on my animal training skills, abandoning my MBA skills
Yet, today , I am surrounded by crazy makers, more so than at any other time in my life (animal lovers all), and desperate to get back to the corporate world where people aren't so crazy.
I have found that animal lovers generally are women who do not have children and anthropomorphize their relationship, much to the detriment of themselves and/or their pets.
People who say they desire "organics" in their lives do not want to pay for it, nor do they want to be bothered by the realities of it (ie: 1 leaf of lettuce is imperfect out of 1000 vs. grocery store reality).
I am very disillusioned even though by anyones standards I am "successful".
Good luck.

I've been clinically depressed since I was 7. I know how to do that. Happy is an undiscovered country.
