2. Well,

FIREFLY had some pretty decent effects, particularly being made in 2002. It also used the f/x wisely and kept the plots more on the situation ande characters. Battlestar Galactica Remake (BSG-R) has nice effects too... brought to you by the same folks who did FIREFLY's as the presentation and feel of the f/x is IDENTICAL. Worse, BSG-R goes out of its way so often to use the f/x so incessantly that the novelty wore off during the miniseries itself.

FIREFLY has a diverse group of people. BSG-R has a bunch of cardboard cutouts.

FIREFLY deals with hard choices that come across more naturally. BSG-R, before I gave up on it, was mere maudlin melodramatic preachy rubbish that would make even Rick Berman blush in embarrassment.

FIREFLY has the characters working for themselves and doing what is morally right in an oppressive 'society'. BSG-R has the president whining about having breast cancer when the whole human race is being wiped out by a race of robots who understandably don't like humankind. Must be breast-envy... why can't they just affix pink magnet bumper stickers to their metallic butts like real patriots would? :sarcasm:

FIREFLY is loosely based on Blake's 7, The Dirty Dozen, The Great Escape, et al, but with some twists. BSG-R is loosely based on the original, though apart from asthetics and watered down cardboard "characters" there's little that separates it from its progenitor (apart from "cheesy dialogue"... but then, I prefer cheesy to maudlin and melodramatic any day of the week.)

FIREFLY's use of language seems natural. BSG_R has an awkward mix of goofy swear words and modern day technobabble t hat just doesn't fly. (I don't distinctly recall the mix, except I do remember its awkward nature would be comparable to that of an 8 year old writing a paper in 'creative writing' course.)

FIREFLY took chances against tinpot dipshit executives. BSG-R played it safe just to get ratings.

Back to characters. FIREFLY's are just cool. Mal is what Cap'n Picard ought to have been, but Rick Berman had other plans... BSG_R has a Latino as a captain, apparently. Indeed, there's a lot of talk about how greeeeeeeat it is for he to be "the first Latino in space". Whatever. If they replace him with a honkey or, hell, even a talking cabbage, nobody would notice a difference because the dialogue (that I recall before giving up on that slop) is too generic. The dialogue does not have an authentic feel to it. FIREFLY grasps this concept, which is a marvel given its ambient setting (more on that in a moment.)

FIREFLY manages to suggest that prostitution is a more ethical profession than the professions of the people they encounter. Can BSG-R even come close to being so novel and mind-opening?

FIREFLY's setting is an admittedly acquired taste given its surreal mix of 1800s western mixed with far-future technology. But it works in many episodes and, let's face it, it's never been DONE before. I doubt any other series could make the mix even remotely convincing. BSG-R is a stereotypical and mundane sci-fi setting complete with consoles with buttons inspired from the design of the old Atari 400 computer's membrane-touch keypad. The usual crap that got boring fairly quickly on Star Trek TNG and its subsequent cash-cow spinoffs; which were only 3 but felt like 30,000...
