Tar Heel basketball discussion thread |
|
Hey fellow Tar Heels Didn't want to hijack the yucky weather thread...
So, the exhibition game last night - I felt that the Heels have a long way to go before they are ready to win the ACC title, but mostly it's a matter of consistency and staying with it for the whole game. The defensive intensity was great at times, nonexistent at other times. Rebounding - same thing - they went up strong at times, other times looked like they couldn't be bothered. Crowd was pathetic - the worst I've seen in a long time (and I went to all the home games for the 8-20 year). Gotta go, be back later, look forward to anyone else's thoughts.

2. it was just an exhibition game - Nike Elite |
|
Score was 102-70. (remember Carolina LOST to Nike Elite last year, so it wasn't a sure win going into the game). Official season opener is home game against Old Dominion on Nov. 22nd.
But it was a good opportunity to check out the team, see improvements, glimpses of things to come for the Heels this season.
More later

You can hijack my thread if you want. It wasn't that big a deal. Mostly just wanted to vent for myself. Like I told you on the other thread, I didn't get to the game last night, but got the same impression you did from the news coverage.
I think the boys definitely have the talent. Question is, do they have the maturity ?

5. some general thoughts about the game. |
|
Tt was sort of hard to tell how much they have improved, since the Nike team weren't really playing at the same standard. But here are some general impressions anyway.
I am SO impressed by Felton's vision and ability to look one way and unerringly pass in the opposite direction, completely faking out the opponent. I'm also impressed by the freshmen Terry and Bohlander and they are really hustling and diving for the loose balls.
Sean May has lost weight and looks to be in great shape, is very quick and grabbed a bunch of rebounds. Although he is being pretty aggressive going for the boards and for the inside basket, at times it looks like he still needs to mentally overcome the injury last year, and just post up strong.
McCants looks good, is taking better shot selection and is looking better on defense. Jawad Williams looks like he's bulked up some, and is going up stronger for the rebounds. Melvin Scott is running the point when Felton is not, and Scott's ball handling seems to have improved tremendously.
All players need to work on free throw shooting -- in the last 2 exhibition games the freshmen have been most consistent at making the FTs.
They are trying to run a very quick game, and obviously this increases chances of dumb turnovers, which did happen a couple of times last night. All around, they just need to stay consistent and not get lackadaisical when they have the lead, which happened a lot last year and has happened a couple times in the exhibition games. Nothing that can't be fixed.
It's gonna be a great year for the Heels!

4. Class of '74 here (And thank you GI bill). |
|
For the First time since Dean retired I'm getting fired up about my Heels again. Even when coach Gut had good teams, I watched, but something seemed to be missing. However, I think Roy may just lead us back to the promised land!
