Golfer Bitten in Head by Rattlesnake

SAVANNAH, Ga. - When Roy Williamson hit a tee shot off the fairway, the lie turned out to be much rougher than he thought. Williamson, 60, was bitten in the head by a rattlesnake when he went to retrieve his ball from some wetlands.

"I saw my ball pretty much in plain view," Williamson said Thursday, a week after the encounter. "Unfortunately, it was being tended to by a rattlesnake that I didn't see."

He said he picked up the ball and felt something scratch at his right temple as he stood up, slapping at what he thought was a briar. He saw blood — and then the rattler, "a good 6 1/2 or 7 feet long."

The men Williamson was playing with — his son, brother and brother-in-law — came running in response to his screams. He remembers reaching the clubhouse, but the next thing he knew, it was three days later.

3. A snake that size would make a fine meal
I've eaten rattlesnake on several occasions. It actually does taste a lot like the dark meat of chicken.

12. His Score?
What did the rest of his foursome shoot? You don't mean to tell me that interrupted their round for this trivial event?!?!?

"Hit The Ball, Drag Jack. Hit The Ball, Drag Jack" Sorry i love that old golf joke.

9. If one is such a great golfer
that one can't hit the ball in the fairway and must wander through the brambles because one is too cheap to leave a ball behind, then maybe one ought to become a tennis player instead.

10. Traditionally, golfers are Village Idiots
The sport began as a competition in Scotland among rival village idiots who spend their days hitting round rocks around with sticks.

13. Most Have Evolved Enough To Know. . .
. . .to stay out of the wetlands over a freakin' golf ball! Geez, inexpensive ones are 60 cents a piece. Anywhere a snake might be living is probably not worth going into over a less than buck golf ball.

I barely look for errant shots, wetlands or no. I more interested in the wasted stroke and figuring out why i hit a bad shot than i am in the ball. I'd just as soon leave it where it went and blame the ball for the bad shot! It couldn't be my fault!

14. Exactly. This is why I buy inexpensive golf balls.
I will wonder to take a cursory look for my ball if it goes astray, but I'm not wandering into a wetlands to get it. It's just not that important.

It's either the ball's fault or the club's fault. I know from experience that it is less expensive to blame the ball. Those re-shafting jobs get expensive.

20. So...
If he opts for treatment at a hospital, instead of the site where he was bitten, does he lose a stroke?

21. At least it was his "other" head, he could have been
relieving himself in the woods, and that would have been a real tragedy.
