Dispute Over Parking On Street Sweeping Day Ends In Shooting
<snip>

A Richmond man shot and critically wounded a neighbor early Wednesday, culminating a monthslong dispute over where the victim should park his vehicles on street-sweeping day, police and the suspect's wife said.

Ron Coleman, 49, opened fire at about 5:45 a.m., apparently fed up that Jano Desousa, 42, kept parking his vehicles near Coleman's home in the Iron Triangle neighborhood on street-sweeping days, said police Lt. Mark Gagan.

Desousa, who was shot in the head, was taken to a local hospital, where he was on life support and was not expected to survive, authorities said.

Coleman was booked at Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez, Gagan said. He could be charged with murder if Desousa dies. It would be the city's 30th homicide this year.

The shooting was the outgrowth of a nearly yearlong dispute between Desousa and Coleman, who is terminally ill with prostate cancer, said Coleman's wife, Jacqueline Coleman. Desousa lives on Seventh Street, which is swept every Tuesday, she said. The Colemans live at a corner home on Elm Avenue, which is swept every third Tuesday. Desousa and his associates routinely park six or seven cars, trucks and vans near the Colemans' house whenever it is street-sweeping day, she said.

Members of Desousa's family could not be reached Wednesday.

"My husband asked him, 'Please don't do that on street-cleaning days,' " said Jacqueline Coleman, 46. Desousa and his associates would respond with epithets and taunt him, she said.

"I think they knew about his medical condition," she said. "They were playing with him on purpose just to jerk his chain and see how he would handle it."
