How dangerous is ham?
So I received about two pounds of sliced ham from a friend who "baked a whole friggin' ham". I'm looking at it, and the center looks a little underdone... should I be concerned? I know he started with a partially cooked ham. Should I fry these slices up before adorning them with swiss cheese for sammich time?

4. Do what makes you comfy..
chummer.

If you wanna fry it up.. ... THEN DO IT!! :P

Personally, I think a good 30 - 40 seconds in the microwave will kill any pesky little buggers that might be in there, as well as adding the essential radiation you need to survive in today's toxic world.

5. I'd fry 'em up, but Do Not Nuke
I tried microwaving a few slices (after adding a little brown sugar to create a "quick sugar glaze"), and they just got tough and chewy.

7. That depends...
If you are Jewish the possibility of danger increases. If you are Jewish and are interacting with the ham between sundown Friday and sundown Saturday, the risk increases exponentially.

I know. I have experienced it. I tried cooking bacon on a Saturday. God sent me a message. It was totally inedible.

B-)

Later,
JM

15. When eating ham or other pink colored processed/cured meat
take your vitamin C or have some orange juice or something that contains vitamin C, it counteracts the nitrates used in the curing process.
Try this- Ham and swiss cheese on an onion roll with some Dijon or other good mustard, Wrap in foil and bake 'til warm and aromatic. Yum.

19. Also, if you have any pets...
...don't let them eat the ham. That's how David Letterman's original dog Bob died (though Bob was living with Dave's ex, Merrill Markoe, at the time of the Heavenly Ham fiasco that liquify his innards).

28. Ah, the Dreaded Hamwort!
My cats have eaten damn near everything, but ham was always a special treat.

I think it's the salt more than anything else.

I once was absorbed in a newspaper with a ham sandwich in one hand. I felt a tug, and realized that a cat was stretched over onto the arm of the chair, and was eating the ham out of the other side.

Sneaky little bastids.

34. I would fry it, as you suggested
Underdone pork products are not something that I would want to fool with. Microwaving makes meat tough and dry, in my experience. I would use a small amount of the fat/oil of your choice in the pan. I would probably use canola oil, which is ideal for sauteing, as it can withstand high temperatures, or bacon drippings, if you have them, since they impart flavor. I'd take every precaution with possibly underdone pork, though ham is cured, unlike pork chops or roast. I avoid pork, altogether.
