I'm making 'toe nail pie' which looks like it is similar to an apple cobbler.
The recipe calls for 'golden syrup.'

Is that corn syrup ("Karo")?
Maple syrup?
Pancake syrup?

THANK YOU!!!

1. i'm holding a tin of it
It says on the front: "sugar refiners"
"partially inverted refiners syrup"

on the back of the tin it suggests 2 websites:

www.cookwithlyle.co.uk
www.cooksclub.co.uk

good fortune with your baking wizardry.

regards,

3. It's made from Cane Sugar.

You can purchase it on line here.

We have it in our grocery stores in Canada. It's made from Cane sugar I believe. I loved it as a kid when my Mom baked it into tarts to use up left over pastry scraps.

On edit. If you need some right away, I would guess the closest equivalent would be corn syrup, but no guarantees how well it would work in a recipe.

9. It's not corn syrup, and corn syrup is not a good substitute.
http://www.britishfood.com/home.html

is an excellent source of British foods in the U.S., including Golden Syrup.

Many local large grocery chains, - especially those which deal in gourmet and imported itesm, carry golden syrup in tins or jars.

It is a syrup made from the sugar refining process, much as is molasses, but molasses is boiled down and cooked 'til darkened. Golden syrup has a pungent, spicey flavour, but substantially milder than does molasses.

Cooked to high temperatures, corn syrup will harden into brickly bits. Golden Syrup and molasses will remain soft, dense and sweet unless a great deal of sugar is added. The best substitute, if you must make it now and cannot find the product, would be to use really high quality real maple syrup, and add in a drop or two of a very pale (not blackstrap) molasses.
