Shortwave radio is my last link to sanity---esp. since the winter schedule
has started. In spite of all the propagation problems with recent and continuing Sun activity, I'm waking up to a full menu of great radio. I switch back and for between 2 BBC frequencies (Asia and Africa); Australia; Sweden; Japan; China; Canada; and a faint North Korea.

This is around 6-8am MT; 1300-1500 UTC. Actually some of the broadcasts start earlier/end later, but that's around the times I tune in.

Today, on Radio Australia I heard an excellent commentary detailing the world wide attacks on writers and journalists over the past year.
Yesterday on BBC, back to back analysis and on the ground reporting from Iraq, two things I never hear on the radio here.

Radio Sweden had a story about a moose drunk on fermented apples knocking over a woman...need a little off the wall stuff sometimes.....

It is so great NEVER TO HAVE TO TURN ON US RADIO....because I can pick up good stuff during the afernoons, dinner time and through the evening.
With the winter schedule, I'm getting the BBC for much more of the day...

I'm in a what is described as a poor reception area, so other places around the country may do even better.....

I'm using a Grundig YB400 PE with about 50 feet of wire outside and coax leading into the radio), going NS and EW (I can plug in either one to see if one gets better reception...so far, they're about the same....)

1. I Have One Too
With an active antenna. It's great to listen to honest reporting instead of the filtered pap we get from our local and national media outlets in the US.

2. Do you follow schedules or do you just "tune around"?
When I was a teenager I had a Radioshack DX-150, and I used to just tune around the 41meter band or whereever the reception was. I did not subscribe to any magazines with schedules.

3. I listen the RHC at bedtime
Which, for me, is about 3 p.m. Radio Havana Cuba is on from 2030-2130Z (3:30-4:30 p.m. EST) at 11760 MHz (25M band). Good signal aimed at New York.

Radio For Peace International

For world wide info on stations and current schedules
the current "Passport to World Band Radio" is one of the
best resources for the Short Wave Listener.

8. Yes, RFPI, I posted about how they were cut off a few days ago....
It was hard to pick up their 2 frequencies here in Southern NM for some reason. I signed their petition a while ago....

7. I have a site up on SW with some links.........
http://www.zianet.com/insightanalytical/shortwave.htm

It needs to be revised since I've since found more good sites.

I sometimes tune around, but most of the time I follow the English schedules that I print out.

The one I use mostly is from Prime Time Shortwave. I print up their schedule of English broadcasts, pencil in my local times zone next to each UTC hour, so I know where I am!!

Another oustanding resource is found at http://www.eibi.de.vu/

FROM MY SITE:
If you know a frequency, but don't know what station it is, you can Search for International Broadcasters by Frequency here!! http://home.cfl.rr.com/happysurfer/swllynx.htm

5/20/03 Prime Time Shortwave at http://www.primetimeshortwave.com/time.html Here's a handy site. It lists English broadcasts in UTC on an hour by hour basis! Print it out (it's about 20 pages) and you'll have an easy to use schedule of broadcasts!

There are others listed down in the main discussion.
