for me it would have to be Natalie Merchant - that tinny, shaky voice just makes my skin crawl. I've left stores because I couldn't take her piped-in voice.

But I'm too tired to kick your ass.
Her vocal placement is painful to listen to - I can't imagine actually vocalizing that way. Actually, I can and that's why it's so painful.

I had the misfortune to be working at 5 days of Queen concerts in London. I had to sit through this excruciating noise every night. I've never seen such a self-centred, delusional narcissistic prat in my life. Most memorable moment was when one wall of the the on-stage changing room which had been erected so that old Freddie could change costumes mid-set collapsed, revealing the man himself struggling into a corset.
The audience, naturally hailed the man as some kind of deity, which I've never been able to understand but I realise I'm in a smallish minority with this one.

They should take a tip from the two ULTIMATE Divas:
Barbra Striesand and Cher, neither of whom do that
They just sing dammit.
Like Julie Andrews, too. The most perfectly pure voice and none of that attention grabbing scaling around and whooping through the song.
Whitney Houston just RUINED Dolly Parton's beautiful "I Will Always Love You"...

They both sing in that kind of whispery, throaty way which seems very contrived. Dave Matthews has the advantage between the two of the them, because I at least heard him doing it first. I'd be interested in hearing how they sound without the affectation.

I just can't take seriously a man whose voice is three octaves higher than mine.
Dave Matthews - what do people see in that guy? His voice is whiny and unpleasant, all his songs sound the same and his ideas have all been done better by other people.
Celine Dion/Whitney Houston - both of them. Maybe it's not their voices so much as their style of singing. They always sound like they're yodeling to me. Just hold the note, dammit! and quit with the up and down fancy shit. It does NOT impress me.

The source of all that has gone wrong with the female voice.
May her hell be a monstrous "Divas" spectacular pitching her against her evil spawn like Mariah, Alicia Keyes, Beyonce, and the unnamed others. The one who can most sound like Karen Carpenter, who could put 10 times the emotion in 1/10th the pitch, gets a ticket out of hell.

135. Rush has interesting music - but the singing voice of Geddy Lee |
|
is like nails on a blackboard to me. It's a kind of geeky high-pitched nasal inflection with rounded hyper-diphthonged vowels that I can't stand. Too bad, otherwise I would have liked to get to know their music a lot better because they have talent.
I have about the same reaction to the singing voice of the lead singer in Sytx, at least the one who sang that tune that goes "Babe I'm leavin', I must be on my way", etc. I don't know what the guy's name is, but when I hear the way he sings "babe I love youuuuuuuuuwwwwwwwww" with the rounded lips it makes me lose my dinner.

Whiter than white. And the music sucks enough to add to his grating white voice.
That sneering loser from Midnight Oil... sounds like he is taking a huge dump while he is sneering.
Morrissey... whining piece of shit! Maybe if he ate a steak once in a while - naw, that wouldn't help his terminal loser wimpiness either.
Freddie Mercury. He was one of the most pretentious hacks to ever fool people into buying albums in history. Operatic my ass. And fuck him for playing Sun City in defiance of the apartheid boycott. Racist and greedy - maybe he and Ted Nugent should have done an album together.
Billy Corgan. I really hate whiny white guys.

I am female. But I'm a far cry from 25. Most of the younger women I know who watched Rockstar/INXS liked MiG or Jordis. A lot of friends in my age group liked Marty.
JD has a huge demographic of women in their 30's, 40's...and up. It is hard to explain, especially to someone who doesn't think he's deserving, why. I've been saying it is because he is vulnerable. That strikes a chord in some of us older fans. It is also because we are of the age group that really remembers the INXS from the late 70's and 80's.
Now on to the talent part.
You didn't say who you thought should have won, but from your comment on JD having the worst singing voice ever, I can tell that you favored someone else to win the competition. Just because you didn't want JD to win doesn't mean his voice is bad...you just didn't want him to win.
Rockstar/INXS wasn't about finding the singer with the best vocal talent. It was about finding the person who was the best fit for INXS. I knew after California Dreaming that it was going to be JD. It was sealed after the first songwriting clinic. The final performance with INXS showed that he was a better fit. Even INXS said that you can't take your eyes off of him when he performs. You always want to see what he does next. That is exactly what you want in a front man for a band.
JD haters say that they needed to find someone to move them into the new century. That is not necessarily what INXS wanted. They wanted someone who could develop THEIR style...their established style. They also wanted someone who could sing their back catalog because they consider themselves a touring band. Everyone wants to hear the back catalog. JD performed INXS songs better.
If they wanted to choose someone who could move them in a more alternative style, they would have chosen Marty. If they wanted someone to move them into a more theatrical style, they would have chosen MiG. Neither is their style. I trust their judgement on what's right for their band.

I think JD has a GREAT voice....though I admit he is delightful eye candy....:) I'm 42.
My 12-year-old daughter loved Mig and slammed JD's voice the whole time. I thought Mig was great, too; I simply felt JD was a better fit.
However, in the end, she admitted she simply didn't care for his voice, it wasn't that she felt he couldn't sing well. Just a style preference.
She even started to come over to the dark side and agree that he's a hottie....:)

so much controversy over a silly TV show. I could go on and on about why I think JD was perfect. I like his voice and I think he is eye candy, too. I will buy the new INXS cd and I can't wait to hear Pretty Vegas on the radio. He is definitely not teeny bopper material. My teenage daughter liked MiG, too.
(Shhh...don't tell my husband but I am part of a new sisterhood who seems to be fixated on his shoe size. I guess what 'they' say is true and is evident in some of the footage of the show. Watch the Mystified video and you will see that JD lied when he said "I don't have a gun" during Come As You Are!!)
He is just perfect for this band. Those who don't think so should remember that this was all about who INXS wanted. That is why they had the final say....and also because phone voting is so easily manipulated and not necessarily indicative of what the public is thinking. Remember Reuben Studdard! They wanted JD and I couldn't be happier with the decision.

I've never understood why Smashing Pumpkins was so popular--and a CD title like Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness? C'mon. It's both mind-bogglingly pretentious and incredibly idiotic-sounding at the same time. I hated them already by that point, and that didn't help.
Whitney Houston is my all-time most-hated, though. Apparently no one ever told her that yelling and singing are supposed to be two distinctly different things.
