1. Yes, we must step up our anti-family agenda and work harder
to destroy the American family, which includes destroying Christmas, which is the most important American-specific religious holiday.

14. Christmas is already pagan.
Evergreen tree in the house... check.

Elves... check.

Yule log... check.

Celebrated close to winter solstice complete with candles and songs about holy night... check.

Jesus' birth date was codified in 336 to correspond with the pagan solstice festivals. I mean, really... if shepards were watching their flocks in fields when Jesus was born, and flocks of sheep only graze in fields in spring and summer, that's a big hint that the mass celebrating Christ's birth was misplaced in the calendar. It really should be celebrated around Easter (a fertility rite named after the goddess Eostre around the Vernal Equinox... but that's another post entirely).

15. That's right.
For ages amongst the Scandanavian peole it was a drunken celebration around the time of the winter solstice.

22. Right you are, intheflow!
Most scholars do agree that Jesus' birth would've likely been in the spring, in or around April. Plus, it's well documented that the Church wanted to do away with the winter solstice celebrations, since they were the equivalent of our Mardi Gras. To rid themselves of the debauchery, they decalred Jesus' birth around the winter solstice and declared it a religious holiday, thus ending the gallivanting and carousing that was custom. Then, as you said, many of the pagan customs were adopted/adapted to what would become Christmas.

34. It's the European version of Santeria.
Santeria

Santeria is an earth religion a pre-Christian religion. African slaves...brought this religion {to the Carribean}. African slaves had to deal with the Christian slave owners who not only wanted to dominate them.. But also feared this religion and looked at it as a demonic primitive religion that need to be ended. The slave owners not only changed what people must worship but also what and how they would dress and speak.

In this time anyone caught in the worship of native gods would be punished and many times by death, Africans and the native Tainos. In order to keep the religion and life, The slaves became "Christianized" at least to the slave owners. The slaves took each African god(Orisha) and renamed them after the saints. Chango the god of thunder became Santa Barbara and they kept the religion in secret. Even today the religion is kept in secret since there is still people who see it as devil worship when it's not.

The European pagans were similar to the slaves in that their native, earth-based religion was banned by the ever-aggressive hand of Christianity. But the Romans, as the head of the Catholic Church, also developed a series of "lesser gods" and made them into saints. Churches were built on pagan worship sites, Mary has achieved Goddess status, evergreens and holly recall the promise of the spring, bunnies and eggs confirms we are meant to be present in the natural cycles of earth. Christianity is a pagan compromise all the way.

29. I was gonna say...
it doesn't get much more pagan than that! (well, except maybe for Halloween/Samhain...oh, and maybe Easter) Besides, everybody knows Jesus was a virgo, so the whole Christian angle is a sham.

33. Full disclosure: I don't know jack about astrology
I just remember reading somewhere, a long time ago, that Madame Blavatsky or somebody like that once said that all the great spiritual teachers in world history were virgos. Or something.

I couldn't find a quote to back this up, but I found this:

"SEPTEMBER 15
As the sun set on this day in the year 7 B.C., an unusually bright celestial body rose in the East. This brilliant "star" was formed in the Constellation of Pisces the Fishes by the rare conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter (the latter also known as the Planet of Kings). The occurrence has led some astrologers to suggest that September 15 may be the true birth date of Jesus Christ and that the Saturn/Jupiter conjunction was, in fact, the Star of Bethlehem observed in the East by the Three Magi. "

Meh...

23. We can't attack Santa Claus though. He's a good Communist!
The guy dresses in red, redistributes a wealth of toys all over the world, and uses a collective of socialist elves to make the toys.

Even his lead reindeer has a red nose!

Hail Santa!

28. Our first step is to remove Christ completely, we've tried with "X-mas"
Edited on Sat Oct-01-05 05:31 PM by ET Awful
but it wasn't effective enough.

This year I propose we just shorten it to "mas". Of course, retailers will just love it because they can play of the Spanish meaning of the word and use it in marketing :)
