5. I liked that the story was complex. Spock's motives were complex.
Until the very end, you see the Talosians as essentially all evil and bad. Yet they provide a very valuable service to Pike who had been their captive.

The ending, once the courts martial personnel disappear, and the Talosian says the closing words to Kirk, gives me chills.

I realize that the show was originally just the part on Talos, minus the courts martial, since I guess the original pilot/show was just going to have Pike as the captain, etc.

I thought what they did with the story once they had the new cast was brilliant. Truly one of the great examples of making lemonade out of lemons.

9. This one is hard...
but "Errand of Mercy" seems especially relevant these days. Another long time favorite is "What are Little Girls Made of". Ironically, I also enjoy "A Taste of Armageddon".

The original show remains my fave by a long shot.

10. The first episode with Romulans
Edited on Sat Oct-01-05 03:29 PM by NewJeffCT
The encounter with the commander who engaged in a cat & mouse game with the Enterprise, only to be outsmarted in the end...

that was good.

The other one i like is where Kirk is accused to ejecting a former rival too early and causing his death.

edited for spelling... thanks

Edited on Sat Oct-01-05 03:05 PM by Straight Shooter
Did I get that spelling right?

That's where Kirk and the Klingons were about to kill one another on a planet that the Klingons were trying to take over, and the elders stopped it by overheating the weapons in their hands. There was just something about the overall wisdom of the uselessness of war in that episode that really got to me. The show ended with the elders becoming very bright lights that faded away, to prove that they were never physical beings at all and were merely accommodating their visitors by giving them physical reference points.

Another great episode was The Library. ;)

edit: I loved Star Trek. I honestly believe it formed my moral reference structure.

34. Hard to say, there are so many... but "Space Seed" wins and not because
Khan is in it.

Khan is in it but the talk of how technology has imporved but how mankind had NOT changed was a real eye-opener.

Season 1 had a lot of great episodes...

Wherein Kirk's friend--Gary Mitchell--transcends to godhood, and subsequently loses his sanity. It's one of the very few hard-edged Trek episodes.
