Question for Lounge females:
Sorry to get so personal, but are any of you tall (5'10" and over) AND really slender w/o much curves? I'm asking because this describes one of my sisters and she has the absolutely worst time finding clothes. She is not anorexic, just takes after our dad.

I am trying to find some place where she might find some clothes, including casual clothing (other than jeans, though she needs them too). She has such a hard time finding clothes, she hardly goes anywhere anymore on a social basis, unless it's to a family member's home, or to work (where she wears a uniform).

If you don't want to give reveal yourself here, could you PM me if you know where to find clothes. Pisses me off that the designers all make clothes to be modeled by tall, very slender women on runways, but you can't find such items in the stores.

Thanks.

1. I have more luck in the Juniors' section.
I do have a bit more curves than I did as a teenager, but not as much hip as alot of women's clothes are cut for. I'm 5'10" and I find that Juniors' clothes are cut narrower and for smaller, less curvy bodies than women's clothes.

2. She does usually go to the Junior's section
but the biggest problem is finding pants long enough. They are always too short for her. Thanks, though. Maybe some day the clothing manufacturers will realize that "tall" does not necessarily equal "big".

3. ..."over 5'10" AND really slender w/out much curves" ??! Good one.
Yeah, right. I WISH that was my problem! haha.

4. I like my curves
though it's taken time to develop that appreciation. If there's anything I know, it's that women in this culture will have body image issues WHATEVER their shape, popularly ideal or otherwise. The only way to make peace with it is to become comfortable in your skin, a process which starts from the guts out, not vice versa.

9. I agree, Tallison, and have
talked to my sister 'till I'm blue in the face, tried to get her to go see a therapist to talk about it, try to be more accepting, but I have not had much luck thus far. But even if she did become more accepting of herself and her looks, there still remains the very real problem of not being able to find clothes that fit well.

13. This might sound wacky, but...
okay, well, it's wacky.

One day a few years ago (and after years of body image battles and beating myself up) I forced myself to stand naked in front of a full-length mirror until I finally liked what I saw. I stood/sat/lied there about 40 minutes before some semblence of that happened. The experience must have recalibrated something in my pea brain, things have been better since. Every once in a while when I feel my self-perception warping I do a mini-session of the same thing. Hey, whatever works! :D

15. I like my curves, too! I am one curvy babe.
We women must embrace our essential goddess natures and rise up, knowing we ARE good enough, just the way we are.

6. Not if you had to go shopping....
I understand what you're saying, as I am curvy and a little heavier than I'd like to be, and I have to work hard to take weight off, but at least there are tall shops around that I can buy things at. It really is a horrendous experience for my sister, trying to find clothes, especially pants. Plus, some women (usually really overweight ones) frequently make snide remarks to her: how can you wear THAT? That looks AWFUL on you. You're so SKINNY. They don't seem to realize that remarks like that are as offensive and hurtful to her as remarks like "You're so FAT" are to overweight people.

She's even tried a seamstress, and that was a disaster. Oh well, the search goes on.

14. I didn't mean to sound so caustically sarcastic. I feel for your sis.
The body image crap is something all women must contend with in this society. Plus, it's hard enough the crap we tell ourselves, let alone the insensitivity others show.

I hope some of the suggestions made in this thread are helpful to her.

20. Yeah, I was talking to her tonight
and of course, the clothing thing came up. She said that sometimes she wishes she WERE overweight, and I said, no you don't, because while there are certainly more choices of nice clothing now for larger-sized women, they still suffer discrimination and nasty remarks.

18. Thanks Shine.
Truthfully, I'm not holding out much hope, primarily because her obsession with this issue sometimes blinds her to even being open to the possibility that there might be something out there somewhere for her to wear.

Wears me out sometimes, especially when I'm not feeling so good myself (I'm sick right now).

5. She's built like a runway model and has a hard time finding clothes? Poor
thing!

Seriously, she should try high end labels, and in her case outlets for the top quality stuff are her best bet for someone on a budget.

Low end stuff like Gap isn't designed for her, it's designed for the standard American woman.

Ann Taylor is a fantastic brand for tall, thin runway types... and the top quality department stores. Shop the sale racks, learn what designers are inclined towards her look. It's homework.

Women shouldn't wear cheap clothes anyhow, but if she's looking for better quality and better fit, she has to buy the good stuff.

It's always better to have a few classics than a lot of trash.

Paris Blues jeans would work well for her, BTW.

10. Thanks rad
Ann Taylor is supposed to be making "tall small" pants for women. I haven't been in there in awhile. She's going shopping tomorrow, and there is an Ann Taylor shop at the mall near where she lives in Oregon, so I told her to check and see if they have added longer lengths in pants, as I was told a year ago they would be doing that.

She just doesn't have hips or much on top either. She really is painfully thin, regardless of what she eats. Plus she has a job where she is on her feet, going going going all day long, so that doesn't help.

16. Gap and JCrew now offer "long" pants and jeans...
some with inseams 34-36 inches. Gap's now got "long" and "extra long" choices for some of its pants (cords, jeans, perhaps even their trousers). Banana Republic also has several different styles of trousers, some with narrower cuts through the hips and thighs... and BR also has longer inseams.

It's not as hard now as it used to be... there are many, many different kinds of pants out there for longer-legged, slimmer women.

30. I'm in the boonies, but I order online.
Gap right now has free shipping if you order over $100 so I'll order over $100 no matter what, and if it works, great, if not, I send it back as cheaply as possible (I HATE shipping and handling charges, and will only order from places that offer free or deeply reduced shipping).

19. I am 6'3"
Used to be really skinny...used to weigh like 140. For casual clothes I used to shop at the men's shops, since at the time, I had no hips. (this was before I had my children).

Try http://www.tallgirl.com - they have stores all over the country.

Another URL is http://www.longelegantlegs.com

Eddie Bauer is another option. In their catalog, all items are listed with tall options.

35. This one looks pretty promising
Not a lot of junior sizes in pants, but there are a few things on ther that I think she would actually like, especially in dress pants. She usually doesn't go places that require much more than jeans (lives in a pretty small town), but there are times when they would come in handy, and I know dress pants are definitely something she wants. Thanks again.

(Why is it I want to call you Kitchy??? :7 )

There is a tallgirl shop here in Seattle, but last time my sister was hear, two years ago, they did not have 1's and 3's in junior sizes. She is absolutely without curves, so this is the challenge. I have not heard of longelegantlegs, so I will definitely check that one out.

Victoria's Secret. The clothes are not very inexpensive but won't break your bank. They carry small sizes but some very long inseams. The return policy is generous, the service by toll-free is courteous and friendly; I buy them by mail. I wish her well.
