Poll question: Is it horribly egotistical to say something you created was superlative?
"That turkey I roasted kicked ass."
"Wow, I had a stellar game last night -- a double-double!"
"I wrote an eloquent essay 10 years ago."

Not:
"I'm a kick-ass chef."
"I'm a stellar basketball player."
"I'm an eloquent writer."

Is the former set of statements inexcusably egotistical, or is it OK to sing your praises once in awhile?

Another one from my jazz band days: An old-timer told us in a jazz clinic: "If you don't think you're good, why should anybody else?"

5. It's good in moderation
and sometimes just best to keep things to yourself

Like, "dude, I just filled up that entire toilet bowl with vomit - you wannanother beer?" might be best kept to oneself

13. Thankfully, no
However, in the interest of amusing and real stories

One time in Tijuana I watched with a certain amount of glee as "Friend A" went into a stall to take a dump, while "Friend B" lined up and banked his piss around the opening at the back of the stall - off the wall - and all over "Friend A" 's back.

I don't think they were very good friends after that

7. If you did a great job, say you did a great job.
False modesty isn't any more pleasant than conceit. It's a sign of a healthy self-esteem to be able to admit when you've well and truly fucked up, and when you've outdone yourself, both.

9. There's nothing wrong with recognizing your achievements...
When I was in college they made us do just that.
I think all of those things are ok to say if they're true, and if they were true, (or false), chances are it would be evident to anybody else who has experienced your cooking, athletic ability, or writing, (to use your examples).

You can be confident without being egotistical.

10. Well I always thought
You may as well blow your own horn because it's hard to get anyone else to do it.

Sorry if I am turning this into a sex thread. :-)

11. God no, and there is such a thing as false modesty
For instance, I can say that I cook a mean veg curry. I know this to be true, because I cooked one on Saturday and I tasted it. It tasted great! If anyone asked me, "hey, can you cook?" what'd be the point of saying, "ah, not really?"

15. You need another category
"Too many people in GD are small-minded obnoxious asshats"

I'd vote for that one.

17. Always.
If one is *truly* confident, one will never call attention to one's own accomplishments. Therefore, if one calls attention to one's accomplishments, that person is an egoist by definition. Incidentally, that was all bullshit. I just think circular reasoning and argument by fraudulent redefinition are fun. Plus, I'm REALLY fucking good at it.

18. Beautiful.
"Dear admissions officer:
I am going to be very modest in my personal statement, because if I am, it's clear that I'll be an acceptable law student and lawyer. Not a great one, of course, because saying so would be egotistical. And that's why you should let me in -- because I'm modest. Not superlatively modest, of course. Just modest. Wait...was that 'of course' too smug? Gawsh, I hope you let me in!"
