Is anyone here in PR or related communications fields.
I am majoring in Communication Studies, PR minor. Just wondering about the job outlook and work types.

1. Make sure you intern at an agency even if your program doesn't make you.
That will help you a lot when it comes to looking for a job once you graduate. You'll have experience in an agency which is something everyone looks for, you'll have connections, and you might even have work to add to a portfolio which always helps or a job offer from the place you intern at.
Also, look into joining communication organizations in your town/state. There are quite a few out there and some offer job postings on their websites but only to members of the organization. (It's worth joining one for continuing education and meeting other people in your field too.) I know a lot of them have student chapters too.

Good luck to you. :hi:

2. Sure am...
...My BA is in Communications/Public Relations emphasis. It's my second degree, and has already served me much better, job-wise, than my first degree, which is in Theater.

Immediately after graduation I was hired as PR Director for our local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. Three years on, I was hired as Marketing Director for the largest arts organization in the area; here I am.

You'll probably find non-profit organizations a good bet...they often advertise for people to do both marketing and PR, as tight budgets mean smaller staffs. Getting a degree in PR means that you're developing good PR writing skills; those will help you anywhere. I'd also suggest you learn some graphics arts - know your way around photoshop, Quark, and Illustrator. It'll really help to have that subset of skills.

BTW...you'll likely never become wealthy working for non-profits...but you'll probably sleep better at night.

3. I second the idea of internships. My daughter obtained her degree
in mass comm. and did lots of internships. She worked with the SF Giants- radio station - Bill Graham Presents (entertainment) and a couple of Bay Area TV stations. It has been great for her career and she is currently working for Edelman Productions.

Good Luck
