53. A little bit better bennies than I had.
I will say this about the pay-it's considered to be under the poverty line in my county. They had a report in the paper about 2 years ago for my county. A single mother w/ 1 child would have to make around $14 an hour to pay for everything(rent, utilities, groceries, daycare, gas, insurance, etc). I make well below that now.

61. I can never think of $13 an hour as low pay
I cannot believe such a report, but then again I own a house and have no idea what day care costs. Of course, my employer pays about $2.3 an hour for my health insurance and that is 43% of the minumum wage right there. Then there are paid holidays and paid vacations which I did not have in previous jobs.

62. Rent around here for a two bedroom runs about $675 a month.
Daycare is $400-500 a month. I figured that if you commuted(as most do in my town) and made $13 an hour you'd have about $200 left-before taxes. Once you take out taxes, any kind of 401K and health insurance you would be a few hundred in the hole(and that doesn't include if you are trying to put away any money at all for your child's future education).

Most of the jobs around here are barely paying min. (college town). I'm making just a few over that now.

66. that sounds high, and I thought they were high here
My house payments were only $225 but I just paid it all off. Commuting is probably not as expensive as owning a car is. I was able to give mine up about two years ago instead of getting a new one. I just think it is insulting to people who make $8 an hour when some report calls people making $13 an hour 'poor'. Lots of people would love to be that 'poor', but $675 is alot of rent to pay.

70. It's so expensive because it's a college town.
They figure they can get 2-3 college kids per bedroom and they charge w/ that sort of thinking. And they know that, between the college kids who have children(state will pick up the bill) and the military(subsidized childcare services) they can charge outrageous amounts of money for daycare.
I make much less than $13 an hour and I have to live w/ my parents in order to survive. Commuting-wise, you have the insurance(much higher if you commute to work), the gas and the wear and tear on the vehicle. $13 is considered "poor" because of how high the cost of living is around here. Our Chamber of Commerce stated that the average rent in '04 for a 2 bedroom apt was $675 a month. We also have no public housing in our town. They've been addressing the situation because so many working families cannot afford to live here anymore and are moving to smaller towns to try to get by. Also, we are close enough to KC(one county over) that some are moving out of Jackson Co. into our county for cheaper land prices. That is causing property rates to go through the roof at a rapid rate w/ no industry in the area to support it.
It sucks but that's the way it is around here now.

65. OK, here are some questions:
How'd you come up with your user name?

Were you born in '74? at Christmas, perhaps?

I'm impressed that you're already pushing 10,000 posts and you've only been at DU since Jan. What's the most you've posted in a day? Ballpark it.

What part of the country do you live in? How old is your kid? Boy or girl?

You can respond to these questions separately, if you're really motivated to increase your postage total. ;)

who never married and has had, on more than a few occasions, gay men making out w/ each other on my living room couch.

Ok, my suggestion: Quit allowing the Baptist Sunday School teachers to marry and divorce every other year. If my local religious teacher has been married five, six or seven times then they have no f*cking clue about the sanctity of marriage.

78. Post late at night.
Pick a buddy and have threads that are nothing but conversations back and forth w/ each other.

And don't be afraid to lock a few threads. Makes the conversation more fun.

79. Depends on the size of the marching band.
You do realize that there were 100 and 10 cornets close at hand, don't you?
(sorry, I was a trumpet player and I like to point out that we had more players in the Music Man.)

81. dang - I once played the trumpet
(middle school and beginning of highschool) and I didn't remember that - til you pointed it out (and suddenly I heard the line in my head) - great catch.

SO revised aren't 76 trombones and 110 trombones & cornets still a bit of overkill?

*in advance - congrats for hitting the 10K mark!*

82. Thank you.
Here are the lyrics:

Seventy six trombones led the big parade
With a hundred and ten cornets close at hand
They were followed by rows and rows of the finest virtuosos;
the cream of every famous band.

Seventy six trombones caught the morning sun
With a hundred and ten cornets right behind
There were more than a thousand reeds springing up like weeds,
There were horns of every shape and kind

There were copper bottom tympani in horse platoons
Thundering, thundering, all along the way
Double bell euphoniums and big bassoons
Each bassoon having his big fat say

There were fifty mounted cannon in the battery
Thundering, thundering, louder than before
Clarinets of every size and trumpeters who'd improvise
A full octave higher than the score

Seventy six trombones hit the counter point
While a hundred and ten cornets played the air
To the rhythm of 'Harch Harch Harch!'
All the kids began to march
And they're marching still, right today

(and I had a one rating in middle and high school for concert and jazz trumpet. My band also racked up alot of one ratings for marching).

I like food too much. But cutting down on portions will definitely feel like starving!
At least I've added to my walking now. The price of gas has me walking more places lately. Maybe the added exercise will keep me from gaining quite so much.
