Update on my security deposit situation (I won)
I posted here a few days ago about my old apartment complex returning only $81 of my $150 security deposit. I was charged for carpet steam cleaning and other cleaning. They didn't even do the math correctly, deducting $67 and cutting me a check for $81.

So I wrote them a letter asking for a full accounting of all charges and proof of "damage". Well, today I got a letter back with a check for the remaining $69 of my deposit. The letter, written by the manager, praised me as an "excellent tennant" and expressed the hope that "there would be no bad feelings between us".

I'm not sure what I did right, but it must have worked.

2. I threatened to take a landlord to small claims court once.
When I moved into the apartment, the shower door had a crack in it. When I left, the shower door still had a crack in it. My landlord tried to charge me $75.00 for it. I got a written statement from the building manager saying that the door was broken when I moved in.

When I handed the dickhead the statement he threatened to fire the building manager. He then had the nerve to ask me if he could "have a couple of days" to get me my deposit. I gave him two days and told him if I didn't have the money, we were going to court. (I didn't know if I could take him to court, but it sounded good.)

On top of that, I had told him that my kitchen sink was backing up and I needed a plumber (He kept sending a handyman.) I woke up one morning with my kitchen floor under an inch of water.

When people started to come by to look at the apartment, I told them that the landlord was a prick and never fixed anything.

It doesn't have to be that hard, does it??

Oh yeah -- congrats on settling your problem!!
