I saw 'Master and Commander' last night. |
|
First off, for fans of the book: It's not the same story.
Second, it's not for kids or sensitive adults. Very violent and loud.
But:
It's a very realistic portrayal of Napoleonic era sailing ships and the battles fought on them. And quite the adventure yarn. I recommend it for fans of the books and historians and adventure fans. But leave your kids at home (I did) and remember, it got a PG13 rating for violence.

I'm going to see it tomorrow night but I'm somewhat uneasy about looking at much violence. The preview I saw was very appealing, vivid photography and moving.

my wife is very sensitive to such things...
The level of violence is lower than Saving Private Ryan.
It's a good yarn, though.

8. Excuse the expression, but I was absolutely blown away! |

I went expecting a great adventure story, the kind of thing the British call a "rattling good tale", and I got that. But I wasn't expecting it to be so well written, and so very well acted. Not just by Russell Crowe, either. Everybody fell into his character perfectly. The doctor and the young blond boy were my favorite characters. So brave.
I like the way they referenced the Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and anticipated Charles Darwin's voyage on the Beagle. I'm still boggled in my mind at how well made the movie was. It also gives you a good idea as to how violent and dangerous ship-to-ship warfare was back then. (And still is today, of course) The old black-and-white Hollywood epics always show broadsides being fired and either splashing harmlessly in the water, or taking out a few peices of the rigging and causing no other harm. There were times during "Master" that I wanted to duck.
Go see it, everybody. It's incredible.
