Question on Interracial Relationships |
|
Do you think that people are accepting of interracial relationships in America or is this still taboo? (Namely White/African-American)

1. Relative to other things, like gay relationships, yes, they are accepted. |
|
But unfortunately, since there are so many racists in our country, it would stand to reason that those same people are not accepting of interracial relationships. What do you think?

Hell, some people still get freaked out by men with long hair. It depends where you are but I think most people don't really care about interracial relationships anymore.

6. Can't speak for America |
|
But here in Britain I think that for most folks it's a non-issue.
I came across this interesting quote from General Eisenhower made during the second world war:
"The small-town British girl would go to a movie with a Negro soldier quite as readily as she would go with anyone else" - this comment being made in a state of surprise.
Obviously we have some racists (The British National Party for example), and things get rather complex due to the variety of different minorities (Indians, Pakistanis, Afro-Caribeans, Africans &c.) but I suspect that in most cases people wouldn't even notice.

I agree that most people don't care, but the problem is that those who DO care seem to have no problem expressing it and sometimes it's unbelievable how bold people are about such things.

I am in such a relationship and you would be suprised, even shocked, at some of the reactions we've had. We are both strong people and ignore it for the most part. Most of the time nobody pays attention to us and we're pretty oblivious to it, but we've actually had people scream at us in the street. I'm talking "in-your-face" screaming. One guy even pushed me from behind, yelled at me in a crowd and then ran away before we could do anything. We've gotten reactions from annoying to disturbing to downright frightening. Although the really bad encounters were few, they were still bad. Strangely enough, the worst encounters were in New York of all places, which is close to where we live. We've been down South together and had no problems. Once we were coming out of Port Authority in New York on our way to a Broadway show and holding hands, a man walked up to us and forced his way between us in order to separate our hands obviously on purpose and he started screaming at us something about slavery and slave masters, etc. It was crazy and sometimes things can be a little scary, but we're dealing with it. So obviously some people do care and have no problem expressing it. Despite it all, we're happy together and plan to stay that way.

10. Or, rather, I don't understand why people have their silly racist mindsets |

I'm happy for you and your beau; especially in that you can handle those damn twits out there.
Thank you for sharing your story (seriously.)
