The job I lost on Friday is posted in todays newspaper |
|
which I happened to see because of course I am looking for something new. I especially like the phrase "must work well under pressure" which I now understand to mean "we're too cheap to hire two people so we'll hire one and make you do two jobs". :banghead:
At least I don't have to go back there.

I had one of those jobs once (well, I've had a few but one comes to mind).
I was hired to replace two girls who were leaving. At the time, that seemed kind of odd but I was young and gung-ho so it didn't faze me too much.
Then another girl in the office left and I was told I'd have to take on her workload too until "we can find a replacement."
After about a month, yet ANOTHER girl left. This was a grocery warehouse that sent out hundreds of tractor trailer loads every night. My original job had been to do the clerical work for all the frozen food loads. Then I got saddled with the job of also doing all the meat loads. Now I was expected to do all that clerical work PLUS finalize all the loads that left our end of the warehouse, a full-time job in and of itself.
I was originally working from 8 pm to 4:30 am with overtime most weekends. By the end, I was going in at 6 pm and leaving at 7 or 8 am. It was ridiculous.
Oh, and I was pregnant with my third child and sick as a dog as well. Needless to say, I got fed up and quit. They told me I was "ungrateful."

3. I was the first technician for this office |
|
of 100 people when I started in July. 70 new users were added during the last 2 months, which was a HUGE amount of work. The director's secretary became "stressed out" and was suddenly allowed to work from home, meaning that 1/3 of her job got dumped onto me. Suddenly I was office manager, facility manager, and tech support person for 170 people and working 11 hours a day with no lunch.
I guess I'm just an ungrateful wretch. :eyes:
My fault I don't work well under pressure, right. When I see that in an ad it is almost a giveaway that its a bad situation.

They were too stupid to treat you well, but at least they've relieved you of the torture. I've been there several times. I hope the future will bring you something more rewarding. Good luck and best wishes.

6. Or... they may be fishing to see what's out there |
|
Too often jobs that are advertised are not real.. the companies just want to know who and what are out there.

Seriously...I know that's a cliche, but things really do work out for the best eventually.
Everything happens for a reason. We usually SEE that reason via hindsight.
Something better lies ahead for you. Get ready. You're gonna LIKE it.

I wouldn't be surprised if you see this ad several more times in the coming weeks or months.
I walked out of a job where the boss was abusive. From time to time, even though I was no longer looking for work--I'd check the paper where they placed ads. Sure enough, they ran an ad again, and again. They couldn't keep anyone in that position, but refused to look at themselves to fix the problem. High turnover says a lot about a place.
Losers.
They didn't deserve you or your loyalty.

when I was having trouble and asked for help their response was to apply more pressure to me, which was exactly what I didn't need... if you can blame everything on the employee and take no responsibility for the situation thats been created, its all so neat and clean.
The thing is, I feel like I could tell them what they did wrong and help them fix it for the next person, but of course I am the last person in the world they would listen to because its my fault not theirs.

10. They probably wouldn't take anyone's advice... |
|
Companies like the one you speak of scapegoat employees. They never have to take responsibility because there is always some poor employee doing their best to keep the peace, and work their hearts out for them.
So unfair, and so typical.
A more functional company would have at least counseled you on what they wanted to see improvements on, and taken responsibility for what didn't work.

I've read along with your saga with that job and you were so right to be stressed out. It sounded like a very shitty job.
Only thing I can say is that I've always believed everything happens for a reason - clearly this job was taking a mental and physical toll on you.
Hang in there and keep plugging away  I think this was a blessing in disguise :)

I worked for a company where I really liked most of the people, but my immediate supervisor was very caustic and abrasive--and a hardcore Repub too. Our receptionist was let go soon after that, so I inherited his duties for a few months till they hired someone new, then let her go after a couple months as well. They hired a support gal for the sales dept., then when she went a few months later they decided to move all of her responsibilities over to me (including "cold calls," which I hate doing and were not in my job description). Since the company was going through a bit of a slump, the profit-sharing vanished, then we took pay cuts; then they started asking us to take "days off" unpaid (I was salaried, and didn't know this was illegal).
There were some other weird things, but the kicker was after I was finally let go due to the company's precarious financial position (had a letter saying just that), with their reassurances that "you're doing a fine job, it's just economics," I was then initially denied unemployment monies because the lady at the unemployment office said my former employer claimed I was fired. I read her my letter and had a check two weeks later, but that was the nail in the coffin for me; I wouldn't even use them as a reference.
Now I'm pursuing getting a teaching degree, and that's what I always thought I should do. You'll find the right thing eventually.
