9. LOL! Makes me want to fly up and celebrate w/them!
You crack me up, Lynn.

Actually, I wasn't aware of WHEN Canada celebrated Thanksgiving. I was just surprised to hear their celebration is so close to the time we celebrate it. Theirs is Oct, ours Nov.

Interesting that we all seem to eat the same or similiar goodies, too. Mmmmmm...

11. I'm curious
about when you thought we would celebrate "Thanksgiving". It is a typical holiday for when the harvest comes in (for agrarian societies). So, in Canada it's near the beginning of October. It's not such a big deal as it is in the U.S. We usually save our travelling for Christmas time (which includes Boxing day, New Year's Eve & New Year's Day... so basically 7-10 days off in the middle winter. Yeah, that's cool. (no pun intended.)

Just on the topic of statutory holidays (as we call them), we have (in Alberta) 11 (paid) holidays. How many do you have?

12. Paid holidays here...
I think it depends on the job--some people's jobs don't offer paid holidays here (unfortunately).

And sadly on my part, I assumed your Thanksgiving was the same as ours. I shouldn't have, of course--that was very American of me(to make an arrogant assumption that way). I do apologize for that. Shame on me:spank: :P

I'll go by what days the post office and banks are generally closed for--those days are traditionally

1)New Years Day(Jan 1)
2)Christmas(Dec 25)
3)Thanksgiving(third week of Nov--this one I always mix up
4)Easter--in some instances Good Friday(religious holiday so it's not always acknowledged)
5)President's Day
6)Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday
7)Columbus Day
8)Labor Day
9)Fourth of July
10)Veteran's Day

There are also some Jewish holidays, that some smaller businesses will close for. Or if someone is of the Jewish faith, they may actually receive as a paid holiday--depending on their company. These days, most companies don't seem to be as generous with those.

:hi:

13. I see. I think.
But, what we have are "Statutory Holidays". They are paid holidays regardless of where you live, or what your employment status is (i.e. full time or part time). If you are working, then you get those days off with pay. If you have to work, then (according to the province you work in), you get paid at a rate set by the government. e.g. I work full time in a job that pays by the hour, Monday to Friday. If I normally work on Monday, and the holiday falls on Monday, I get paid regular pay. If I normally don't work on Monday, then I get either straight pay, or another day off at straight pay. It sounds complicated, but it really isn't. e.g. if I normally work Monday, and I have to work Monday (holiday) then I get paid either double time or I get paid straight time plus another day off with pay.

14. Canada is a far more democratic country
obviously (to me at least). Everyone gets the same pay--which is wonderful! Here it depends on where you work, and what you do. The employer or company pays, not the govt. Teachers, postal workers, bank employees, govt. employees, city/state employess are primarily the people that would get all of those holidays off with pay.

I really appreciate your openess and willingness to share all of this with me. I can't thank you enough! I've wanted to learn more about other countries and what they offer to their citizens, seeing how our govt. seems determined to take more and more away here.

It's a great learning opportunity for me. It's also so nice to know everywhere isn't like here. Thank you!

8. No, no, that's not what I meant...I'm sorry.
:hi:

I was just surprised that it was going on when the original poster stated. I wasn't aware of WHEN Canadians celebrated Thanksgiving.

Sorry about that, looking at it now, I see I didn't write my post in a manner that what I meant, was really conveyed.

Happy Holidays to you!

10. Run! Don't walk
when she starts serving up the "Turkey Cutlets" and "Turkey Soup". I speak from experience. At these particular points in time, the turkey is done. Done. Done. Done.

Never been a big fan. My roommate's mom came over and cooked, I slept then made pasta and chicken when I woke up, haha.

15. We did the gathering of the clan thing
at the aunt's (and Uncle's) cottage. Only 15 this year. Friday night was what seemed like 5 gallons of chili, Saturday night a 12 lb prime rib. Sunday was a 28 lb turkey with mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, mashed turnip, spaghetti squash, summer squash, red lead, cole slaw, punkin pie, chocolate cupcakes, ice cream cake (it was a birthday) and other stuff I have deleted from my memory bank.

I don't remember much of yesterday, although I am told we made cider. I didn't believe it but this is offered as proof

so I guess I'm implicated. Leftovers tonight.
