Okay, it's official: I went vegan.
It's for health reasons; anyone who's seen recent pics of me knows I ain't svelte, whoopty shit.

And it's not because I wuv widdle chickens and moocows; fuck 'em. I see eating meat as self-defense...Lord knows cows would get ornery and kill US if we didn't keep 'em subjugated.

Anyhow....for a a little over a week now, I've been on a "raw" diet. Nothing cooked, all veggies, some fruits, some, uh, nuts. It's been going great, actually. I started lifting weights again, and today I'm fisting, uh, I mean fasting.

Any DU vegan enthusiasts care to chip in with comments/complaints/fart noises? I'd love to hear how y'all stayed on the plan.

3. Congrats on going vegan...
There is a spot on DU with some excellent recipe suggestions for veggies and vegans.

Let me just wrestle up a link for ya...

I stay on plan by planning my meals carefully to ensure that I have adequate nutrition. It's quite easily, actually. I know there are also some great links saved in my favorite places... when I get a moment, I'll post those for ya.

I've been vegan now for about 7 years. It can be done. :)

6. Here's the thing, though:
I want to specifically stay on the "raw" vegan diet. I want to get away from cooked food.

I have a coworker who was a raw vegan for a year and a half, and he lost 80 pounds on that diet. Since we're both cooks, he's given me some tips and pointers about how to stay on it....for instance, soaking the vegetables overnight instead of boiling them, aminos instead of salt, etc.

Thanks for the encouragement! I feel great after a week. My mind drifts back to an old Dick Gregory routine...this was after Gregory went on a hunger strike. A reporter asked him, a year after the strike, "So, do you still have cravings for steak?"

And he replied, "Steak? That was the first week. Now I have cravings for dog food."

I hope I can make it past the first month.

Thanks for the link!

18. Looks interesting.
I'll have to stop by that place...I can do without the crystal-rubbing new agey shit, though.

Making a mental note to stop by Karyn's tomorrow...thanks for the link!

19. I have found that with raw foods veganism....
There is a higher tendency towards metaphysical rock adoration. Just kick them aside as you make your way towards the carrots.

20. Nice!

New Age stuff makes me gag....I swear more people would go vegan or raw or even just liberal if the spokespersons for those concepts weren't hippy-dippy hobbit-fucker types. That kinda stuff alienates so many people.

I will do my best to avoid the gobbledy-gook in my quest for roughage.

Remove Hobbit-Fucker from the official payroll. NOT going over well.

5. I've started on a similar plan.
Edited on Tue Oct-11-05 05:49 PM by Fenris
I'm tired of feeling overweight and I find meat has begun to repulse me. I'm not on a raw diet by any means, but I have cut out unhealthy shit.

Congrats! :toast: Fist away!

I should be on this fast for the next two days. If I get cranky, show me pictures of The Princess.

11. The fasting heaves!
Those are unrewarding. When I last went on a fast (two years ago - for two weeks - lost 30 pounds) I got sick at some point, and I spent my time wrenching up bile. Fun times!

12. Well, now I have something to look forward to.
I can't wait until little slivers of my pancreas start showing up in my clear, bilious vomit launch. Remind me to have my camera ready.

15. I have a friend who started the same diet this week.
I haven't heard how it's going, but I'm very interested in it. She's also trying to lose weight. Good luck with it.

21. Well...um, welcome!
Can't say I agree with you on the cruelty thing, but we veggies are a pretty welcoming and non-judgmental bunch so welcome! Have you checked out our little forum yet?

Not only is going veg good for your health but it is also even better for the environment. It's a major good thing to do, you can take your pick of the many reasons why.

FWIW, since I went veg, I lost about 10 pounds within the first couple weeks or months (I forget which) and my energy just went through the roof. I ate meat my entire life so it is of course a big adjustment but it gets easier every day, I promise.

:) Kudos to you for making a good moce for your health and the environment!

23. I was vegan for a few weeks after my bout with food poisoning
It does make you feel much better. My staple was whole wheat milled flax seed pasta with roasted broccoli in a balsamic oil sauce--easy to make and quite tasty.

24. Being vegan is so easy, it ain't even funny.
Wait til a month passes. You'll wonder how you ever got by. And losing weight...heh heh, you'll be amazed.

And energy levels! You started lifting again, well as a gym rat, I can tell you that I've never looked back.

Congrats on your decision. Going raw is beyond me, so big ups on that.

Join us in the Veg forum, or the "tofu ghetto" as it's so endearingly called...
