I have three huge spider webs on my front porch
One right beside the door, and one right under the porch (where the sidewalk meets the porch).

The one right beside the door is still spinning the web. I was just out watching. It's fascinating.

However, I'm scared I'm going to walk into one of them.

I hate to wreck their work, and I don't really want them to leave (they take care of all the insects).

You think I should get the broom and "relocate" them?

1. Well... the thing is, they don't have a lot of spare 'silk'
Edited on Tue Oct-11-05 10:02 PM by crispini
so if you move the web when they've just finished doing it, they'd have to start over with a (much) smaller one, and possibly not catch anything or even starve, if they didn't have any silk left at all.

Especially now it's fall and they need all their silk for their egg sacs they are about to make -- I'd wait if you could avoid it.

What kind are they? Garden spiders are my favorite, the big yellow and black kind. I have several of those in my yard.

2. I say let them stay
They really don't make any noise or chase your cats so let then stay a while.

3. Don't touch them!
Edited on Tue Oct-11-05 10:16 PM by Floogeldy
You know they are there, so you won't walk into them.

They pull them up, usually once a day.

Just be aware.

:)

Edit: Also, they usually go away in the Winter, at least where I am. They don't have that long of a lifespan.

4. I wreck their work when they put their work in obvious places
like the front door area. Now if they want to do that behind or on a side of a bush, that's fine. I don't like it where everyone who comes to the front door has to point out to me "Oh look you have a spiderweb"

6. I just saw a little bug vacume in hedonics catalogue. It vacums up little
critters without hurting them (supposedly) so you can then deposit them outside. That is what I am getting for Christmas. Didn't know webs were so hard to make.

23. I remember your Black Widow problem.
I wouldn't worry about the garden spiders that spin huge webs. Actually, I am fascinated by them.

But Black Widows--well, that's spider-squishing time.

25. Do they look like this?

If so, they are golden orb spiders. They won't bother you. Leave them be. They will eat mosquitoes and other little pests that get caught in their webs. And they are fun to watch.

The girl spiders are huge, like the one in the photo above. If you look around the edge of the webs, you will be able to see the male spiders, which are much smaller.

Please don't move the webs or the spiders. They probably have an egg sac nearby. If Charlotte were a real spider, this is what she would be.

A golden orb (in the photo above) built a web spanning my window, and she stayed there for several weeks, tending to her egg sac. She almost became like a pet. That was a couple of years ago. Now, every year at this time, we have three or four golden orb webs and spiders on our porches. I am sure that they are the grandchildren of the spider in the photograph above, so I never disturb them.

30. Thanks. Indeed, that's Charlotte, our window spider from two years ago.
DU's ForrestGump helped me figure out what she was, when I first posted the photo on DU. I edumacated myself on the species, and now I admire golden orbs.

I took this photo on the same day... a ruby throated hummingbird.

31. Is this your spider?

or

It's the only American orb spider that continues to make webs in cold weather. It's a brown orb spider...at least that's what I would call it. Orb spiders spin huge webs, and that's why they are called orbs.
