I'll never understand. (Warning: rant!)
Damned if I do, damned if I don't.

With the women I interact with on a daily basis, if I fail to notice something they've done with their hair, I'm nothing but an unaware self-absorbed jerk. My wife, my sisters, my female coworkers - it's all the same.

Not noticing something they've done with their hair is BAD BAD BAD.

So the other day I ran into our neighbor, a very pleasant young woman who lives two doors down. I noticed that her hair looked different, that she had colored it, and I complimented her on it. Apparently she was upset that I had noticed, and complained to my wife about it.

Noticing something she'd done with her hair was BAD BAD BAD.

If I live to be 100 I'll never understand. The monkey never learns.

1. Mac, it's a plot
that all women have to make you feel inadequate. :sarcasm:

Your neighbor is an ass. You tried to say something nice. If she's going to complain a compliment, she'll eventually alienate everyone and they'll stop giving them. She'll learn her lesson.

2. Try this with _every_ woman in your life, mac56:
"Have you done something different with your hair?"

If the answer is "No," you can shrug and say, "Hmmm. Just askin'."

If the answer is "Yes," you can say, "Hmmm. I thought so," and let your tone of voice do the talking.

(By the way, mac56, I've done something different with my hair today, and you didn't even notice. )

3. Any woman..
... who is not my wife or SO and expects me to notice/give a rat's ass about her hair is living in la la land.

Cut it off honey, I could really care less.

5. I'll go along with this. I recently cut my longish hair to a pretty
short length, and only one of my male co-workers noticed and/or said something about it. I was perfectly fine with that, I don't need reinforcement about my hair from men (and women) that I am not close friends with!

4. OMG. The secret order of the Feminum is out to get you!
:wow:

Compliment a chick and they'll go right to your spouse and make all sorts of insidious claims!

Okay, I'm obviously bonkers but I dare say your neighbor is nuttier than a Pearson's Salted Nut Roll...
