Paging the DU auto mechanics....
I figure with the huge variety of people on here we must have at least 5-6 in the house, no? Anyway, you know that "Service Engine Soon " light on your dashboard? When it says soon.....how soon is soon? Mine has been on for quite a while now.

1. you can have the codes read at he dealership.
Sometimes that light comes on if your gas cap isn't fitted snugly, or if you leave the car running when you put gas in.

5. That's the "check engine" light.

The "Service Engine Soon" light is a timer. Usually there is something in the operator's manual that tells you how to reset it yourself. For Hondas, press the button next to the odometer and hold it. Then turn the key and continue holding the button until the "Service Engine Soon" light goes out. You are then good for another 7500 miles.

Check Engine means usually means that something with your emissions control system is amiss, which can be anything from a loose gas cap to a bad O2 sensor. More likely than not, you'll have to go to a mechanic to have it checked out.

2. If you have an AutoZone nearby
They'll let you have/borrow the plug in "key" that'll show you what the service codes are. They'll look them up, as well. Could also be the gas cap, as BMLH stated.

6. I drove my last car for two years with the check engine light on.
Finally, I just traded it in.

7. I wouldn't recommend that.
The emissions control system, which usually triggers the "check engine" warning, is now an integral part of the engine system, and your car doesn't run right when something is wrong with your ECS. You can screw up your car if you don't get it fixed.

8. Make sure your gascap is on tightly
I got the check engine light and it turned out my gascap wasn't on tight and the O2 sensors could detect a leak. After you tighten it, it will take about 2-3 starts until it goes away

9. If your car is newer, it's a loose gas cap.
If it's a marathon man like my Cavalier (210,000 miles and counting), I'd take it in for a diagnostic.

Usually that thing shouldn't be coming on for real until around 60-70000 miles.
