So, you think parents giving their kids strange names is a recent |
|
phenomenon? It's actually an old custom.
I'm reading a book on exploration, and it turns out that when Henry Hudson set sail in April, 1610, he had among his crew none other than a guy named Abacuck Pricket.
Really.
No wonder the guy wanted to leave England and take his chances in the frozen Arctic with Hudson. He was probably sick and tired of the reaction whenever he introduced himself to anyone.

It's "sherbet," with only one R!

17. Do you suppose that one day all of those illiterate parents will wake up |
|
and figure out that all of their precious little "Britneys" would have had their names spelled "Brittany" if they (the parents) hadn't been so fucking stupid?
Or do you think the girls will find out first, then kick their parents' asses?

21. Hey don't look at me, but I can certainly relate to wanting to kick |
|
my parents' asses. I have a VERY unusual first name that I absolutely HATED when I was a kid, but now I love it, of course. I've never met anyone with the same name, in my entire life, and I'm 41.
My first name is "Chimene", pronounced "Shi-mane". I added a little accent thingy over the first "e" when I was in college, thinking it would help with the constant mispronunciations. Sometimes it's helped, most times it hasn't. But, as you can imagine, I've had to contend with a lifetime of mispellings and mispronunciations. If anybody gets it right the first time, they get a gold star in my book. :)
Parents got it from the movie "El Cid", with Sophia Loren and Charleton Heston. Sophia Loren played Chimene, my mom was pregnant, they loved the name and here I am.
To this day I'm a huge movie buff. Go figure. Funny, huh?

No lie. Sometimes you just have to wonder what they were thinking when they named their child.

15. When I was a kid in Vermont, I had a friend named Linwood Magoon. |
|
Never was able to find out where he ended up.
Of course, we have some strange names in our family, because I have so many cousins.
There's the cousin from the Irish side, who's always the first one to go outside and soak up the spring rays of sunshine: Patty O'Furniture.
And the other cousin, who's still in high school, and smokes all the time: Nick O'Teen.
One of my female cousins married an Italian guy, but we never invite him to picnics: You guessed it, his name is Sal Monella.
Strangest of all is my female cousin who married a Hindu guy, but found out that all he does is to spend every day at the horse racing track, even though he doesn't generally win: His name is Sumba D. Betondibay.
Had enough? I bet you have.
