He carried the Reds, who were expected to be swept, in a WS sweep against the A's, and turned the Mariners into a consistently winning franchise after decades of sub-.500 ball. No other living manager ever led their team to 116 winning games (I blame 9-11 for throwing the Mariners rhythm off, they never regained that momentum after play resumed).
As for his temper, he always expresses remorse and humility - unlike Knight, or others like him, who never apologize for their behavior.
He just loves the game. Lou is the only Yankee I ever respected, along with the late Lou Gehrig.

Yeah, it was a horseshit call, no question. But such is life...and, last night, with all the horseshit calls that went against the Sox...you got no right to bitch.
And the other horseshit calll of the night was Crede being called out at 2nd on that fly. No damn way, he was safe back in!!
You'd have thought, until that horseshit call on the third strike by AJ, that the umps were on the payroll of the angels.
EVERY lousy call has gone against the Sox until just then.

Goddamn selfish bastard angels!! WE haven't had a pennant since 1959, you guys oughta just lay down and die for us!! IT'S OUR GODDAMN TURN!!
I have waited all my life to see a White sox pennant, and if you guys deny me that, the Angels will forever be on my shit list!
Much like the Cardinals already are for beating my beloved 'Stros last year!
Goddamn,, I am a long-suffering fan, NEITHER of my favorite teams has won a pennant in my entire lifetime!!
I been a White sox fax for all my 34 years, and a 'Stros fan for 20. And I have YET to see either one of my teams get a pennant.
Now go home you rotten Angels, and you rotten Cardinals!!
Damn you, trying to ruin my dreams of a Sox-'Stros Series!!

Tonight I thought there were many close calls against the sox too. It's a shame that Josh Paul is in the middles of it, kid from buffalo grove, former WS. I saw some replays that looked like he maybe bobbled it after the initial catch...
