Study Suggests More People Turning To Boxed Wine
<snip>

WASHINGTON -- Would you like that wine in a bottle or in a box?

According to a marketing information company, more and more people are preferring the latter. AC-Nielsen said sales of premium-priced, three-liter boxes are increasing faster than any other segment.

Industry consultant John Fredrikson said boxed wines are appealing to the growing number of Americans who drink wine more regularly. He said they want something that doesn't need uncorking and will last longer than just a few days.

The amount inside is also a good value. A 3-liter box contains the equivalent of four bottles of wine, and the cost translates to around $4 to $5 a bottle for quality wine. A box should keep for at least four weeks after opening.

Boxed wine actually has been around for years. But traditionally, it was low-brow stuff that the wine bottle crowd wouldn't touch.

Not anymore. Now, 90 percent of sales of 3-liter boxes are by people switching some of their buying from bottles. The rest are starting to buy more wine or trying it for the first time, according to ACNielsen

For the record, boxed wines are not really in boxes. They're actually bags in boxes with spigots that keep the air out. That keeps the wine from oxidizing.

19. No. I didn't know you could get wine at Target.
I don't think they sell it here.

The Almaden white sangria is pretty tasty also.

6. I always buy boxed wine.
Plus it is cheap. Depending on where you buy it, it's $9.95 to $11.95 for white wine.

10. Okay who's tried this and what's a good brand you'd recommend?
I loves my bottled wine, but that savings... if I like the taste, I may to consider switching for my everyday cab needs.

22. I concurr on the "Black Box" brand.
I've had both Merlot and Cab by them and the Cab is actually pretty good. Plus, it supposedly saves for quite a few weeks inside the box and sealed bag.

11. There's nothing inherently wrong with a box as a delivery method.
(Assuming you don't want to age your wine -- I can't imagine that works well.)

Same thing with a screw-top -- in fact, screw-tops eliminate the possibility of cork taint.

It's just most of the time, boxes and screw-top bottles have shit wine in them.

Three Thieves makes a good line of boxed and jug (with screw top) wine.

23. The plastic bag inside the box is the problem
High end, vintners are never going to fully change over to boxed wines because the plastic can be tasted on the palate by expert sommeliers. The average consumer may not be able to detect it, but the trained professional can. Glass imparts no flavor, that's why it's the standard.

31. There you go!
That is so true. Thats the same reason wine does not come in a can. You degrade the wine placing it in such a container.

Just like with beer, plastic, and metal screw the taste for those of us with a palate sensitive enough to taste it.

32. Don't get me wrong
I'm not implying that my palate is any more sophisticated than anyone else's here on DU. I do my best, but my training is lacking, since my wallet is empty. ;-)

It's just that one of my friends is a sommolier and she says she detects a difference. Being my friend, I tend to take her word for it. I've seen her do amazing things during blind tastings.

13. Inglenook was one of the first vineyards to do the boxed wine thing,
Edited on Thu Oct-13-05 09:41 AM by fleabert
now known as the Neibaum Coppola vineyard, an exceptional wine. I don't think they do the boxed bit anymore. Coppola was committed to getting back to the Neibaum way of producing quaility wine. Not that inglenook was awful, but they placed profit ahead of production quality- a vastly different approach than Niebaum took, or coppola takes!

I went on the tour a couple of weeks ago, can you tell?

15. Inglenook still makes boxed wines
We have them as house wines on tap in the bar where I work. The Chard is shitty, chablis is better. The cab is ok.

I used to buy wine in a box but haven't in about 10 years.

I prefer my wines in a bottle.

21. same here.
inglenook used to own the neibaum vineyards in addition to the ones they currently. I cut my drinking teeth on many a boxed wine, not to mention a good jug or two!

I enjoy and appreciate wine much more now that I am a geezer!

30. Only if you drink alone.
My great Uncle's house was always happy. He never ran out of wine or beer for his honored guests. He was a very wealthy man in spirit, if not always in cash. The boxed wine he served in his house was the best wine on this earth.
