Poll question: Shittiest Beer?
Folks, I drank PBR once or twice (or more) in my redneck Virginia Beach days many years ago, and although far from my favorite cheap beer, it did in a pinch.

There was far worse shit than PBR out there, so here is a partial list for your voting pleasure:

(Old Style was my favorite cheap beer, for those keeping tabs)

65. Including, but not limited to
ANYTHING made by Anheuser-Busch or Coors.

As far as the A-B stuff is concerned, it can't even measure up the the Reinheitsgebot. There's far more rice in any A-B product than barley. And the closest hops gets to Budweiser is the depiction on the can.

By far, the best "typical" American beer, on the other hand, is Yeungling's "American Lager." Crisp, clean, not ricey and watery, with an idenitifiable but not overwhelming hops note.

PBR runs a close second.

Dad was also in the Navy. We lived near that mall, lol. I used to see a LOT of movies at the theater they had in the parking lot. This was back when that mall was considered "downtown" and the Pembroke One 6-story office buliding was a "skyscraper".

Lived in a subdivision called Pembroke Meadows in the 70's/80's (and then we moved to a location near Cheseapeake later in the 80's). It isn't much of a place - hence the many nights of music and beer. :toast:

I wish I could remember the name of that place. It had an orange roof and dark green walls. Damn!

We moved across town our last year there, and my sister ended up graduating from Kellam in 91. I went to three or four of the elementary schools, but the only one I remember is Rosemont.

Then my parents split and I came to Maryland with my Dad.

So, that's our mini-biographies, eh? :D

Pembroke Meadows was my elementary there.

I think I know which restaurant you are talking about. It may have been a Sambo's once, and then changed. I may have to research that, lol.

If you were there in '82 and on, we were neighbors for 6 years before I left. Too funny. :D

100. Very fond memories, thank you...
A long time ago when I was in college I had a class that started at six in the evening, while my day classes ended at noon. Usually I just hung out and studied.

A young woman I knew had twelve of these green things, they came in a flat of twelve I think (like they were too cheap to include a real box!) warm in her car.

We knew we'd get in trouble if we got caught drinking on campus, so we hid ourselves away in the bushes behind a school parking lot.

By the time we had to go to class all the beers were gone. If I remember correctly we talked about Nietzsche and other German philosophers, submarines, computer operating systems, and she was wearing a tube-top.

I don't know what people thought about us when we staggered into class at a quarter past six, but I truly didn't care.

Scotchbuy used to be sold at Safeway .99 a six, Buckhorn a local beer sold for the same unemployment beer. I drank some nasty shit called Pfeiffers gave me the worst case of the shits ever. Then there was Falstaff, I stole it from my old man. The worst by far I've ever came in contact with was meister brau, even when I was a hard core two fisted drunk I wouldn't touch that shit with a ten foot pole.

104. It is cheap beer, period
Even in Mexico it's considered cheap. It used to be marketed to peasant laborers because it was very light-bodied and inexpensive.

The only reason it became so popular was the trendy Orange County yuppie wannabe teenagers who drank it in Tijuana in the early 80s.

Once those teenagers became legal in the US, they started demanding Corona at the American bars. So naturally they started improting it to the US.

114. Back when I moved to Seattle...
Back in '88, micros were just beginning to make a dent in the grocery stores and not just pubs. I quickly came to love them. Back then, you knew they were a real micro when they were not available above a 6-pack, and cost at least $7.00. So for budgetary reasons (college, etc.), I went back and forth betwen cheap and good.

Now, I save the cheap beer for camping - but retain my beer snobbery for pubs and restaurants.

I prefer ambers - good, deep-copper ambers. I like a balance between hoppiness and maltedness. Stouts and porters are right up there too.

...after drinking nothing but microbrews for months. I felt like that guy in the commercial who freaks out and starts screaming "I CAN'T TASTE MY BEER!!!!!!!"

So, back to the microbrew; I'll budget around other things to keep buying it. I'm not sure I prefer any certain kind (yet); Great White by Lost Coast is fookin great--a nice citrus-y white beer that I'm addicted to--but I'm also hooked on some of the darker ales, too, especially the slightly hoppy ones with an almost sweet aftertaste, like Bear Republic's Hop Rod Rye. Stupid, ugly label, but the beer is amazing.

Yum.

151. my point, sorta....
thought it was great in the college years (for the reason you state - and it was cheap as heck during "little kings night" at the local college bar - 3 for $1) - just that I realized how awful it was when I tried it years later. It is really awful.

127. Schaefer. Definitely Schaefer.
Schaefer was the beer of choice of drunk MI trainees. You'd go to the bowling alley, order a six-pack of Schaefer and a hamburger...a complete MI seven-course dinner for under four dollars. Ya just can't beat that.

130. Michelob Ultra
I think it's called. Carb-free or something. Someone handed me one and I took a swig without looking, and I thought I'd been given a bottle of club soda. No flavor at all.

And BTW I like Iron City. I love those bottle-shaped cans.

Brewed by a total RW family. And I'd include any Molson product since they're now intertwined by the take-over.

165. Ah, PBR and Old Milwaukee were faves

of my dad's. And my mom smoked Chesterfields, unfiltered, which discouraged me from getting into their beer or ciggies much! Was that the plan?

172. I had Fosters the other day
I was at Outback (not my usual thing), and I'm lookin at the beer list and I'm thinkin of going with Guinness or Killians and my friend says, "You're at a fake Australian restaurant so get a fake Australian beer".

I had recalled that Fosters is Australian for crap (think I heard it here actually) and sure enough I was proven correct. My friend did apologize.

Other nasty beers (imo) are MGD, Coors, and most mass produced American beers.
