31. I grew up with a family of "J" kids, but there were only 5 of them
and names weren't bad:

Joel Buford III (named for father & grandfather
Jerrie (short for Geraldine actually so only a "j" sound)(named for her mother)
Jack (short for Jackson Owen) (named for an uncle
Jeffrey (not sure if this is a family name or not.
Janece Prince (grandmother's maiden name was Prince)

It could have been a lot worse

I found it interesting with all those J names, the mother of 16 had no one named Jane, Jeffrey, Joel ...they chose some real loser names, didn't they?

Being a fan of nice normal names, naming kids for grandparents, or using family names I find many of the names currently in vogue to be irritating at best.

4. I know families who did this that weren't Fundies
Of course the families in question had 5 children or less so they didn't run out of normal names with that letter.

6. I remember reading once that Bill Cosby did this with all his kids, too
only with the letter "E"...but get this, it was so they would remember to infuse their actions with "Excellence".

Jeez, talk about pressure!

28. OK...I didn't realize he had that many
I'm not a fan of name themes. After the first few, the families I've known start picking stupid names just so they'll fit the pattern.

24. A friend of mine told me about a family she grew up
with in Georgia and their kids were named in alphabetical order, the first one had a name beginning with A and then B and then the final one had a name beginning with C. She told me the mother of these kids was obsessive about order.

10. Breeders do this with dogs.... No, really!
Each bitch's litter gets names starting with the same letters, which designate the littler number. E.g., litter #2 has Babs, Bow-wow, Boo, etc...

11. My dad, my brother and I are all "B"'s.
My best friend and her three children are also all B's.
I think they get hooked on just one initial and go w/ it (my dad's and brother's name is a Biblical name but it is also a very popular name. My best friend and her children do not have biblical names).
Most of the fundies around here name their kids from the Bible. The more obscure the word the better the name it seems here.

Having 16 kids in the first place, on the other hand, is neither apolitical nor cutesy.

Edited on Thu Oct-13-05 05:58 PM by jmm
My brother and I were the first two in our generation and got names beginning with J. Then her siblings started having kids with J names and pretty soon they kept on doing it just to fit in. Only one aunt of mine didn't do this too. However she did vote for Bush so even though I love her she clearly does not have the best judgment skills.

25. It distinguishes your 16 kids from the neighbor's 16 kids.
If you have so many kids that you can't remember their names, every little bit helps.

And I think having multiple sons with the same first name is not unknown among Latino families.
